CBS/NYTimes Poll: Older, White, Male Republicans = The Tea Party
A poll conducted by the New York Times and CBS News reveals those said to be affiliated with what has come to be known as the Tea Party Movement are majority White, older, male, educated and Republican or Republican leaning, calling themselves very conservative.
Those surveyed displayed a distrust of President Obama and his administration similar to concerns voiced during the 2008 presidential campaign, concerning the President being a foreigner and believing his religion is not Christianity but Islam.
Surprisingly, 52% think the taxes they have been paid have been fair.
The overwhelming majority of supporters say Mr. Obama does not share the values most Americans live by and that he does not understand the problems of people like themselves. More than half say the policies of the administration favor the poor, and 25 percent think that the administration favors blacks over whites — compared with 11 percent of the general public.
What are considered more controversial beliefs within the Tea Party, like those who believe the President was not born in the United States, are usually double the percentage of individuals not identifying as Tea Party members.
