Challenger disaster, 26 years ago
I remember flying from Tampa Florida on my way to New York City looking off to the right side of the aircraft and witnessing what I thought was a successful space launch. Then, the pattern of smoke and debris struck me as very odd.
When I landed at LaGuardia Airport, I learned that the Space Shuttle Challenger had a fatal crash.

My story is that I was in Orlando for a conference and the session chair announced a launch, that was delayed a few times, then that it was a go, then that it had exploded. The night before was freezing cold. The fuel tank warranty said do not use under 32 F. Assholes with shit for brains waited for the thermometer being warmed by a rising sun to read 33 F to give the OK for liftoff.
