The bridge was demolished with explosives (see the other images in this gallery for the explosion and collapse) after being condemned because of big cracks in the footings that couldn't be repaired. The bridge was 80 years old and the footings had no rebar. The 80 years of intense freeze/thaw action of Vermont winters took their toll and the footings were disintegrating, making travel across it extremely unsafe. A temporary ferry is being created now and a new bridge will be completed in the next couple years.
