Chandra Levy Murder Trial Begins 9 years After Her Death

Ingmar Gandique is now standing trial for the murder of Chandra Levy, nine years after the Capitol Hill intern was found dead in Rock Creek Park.

Chandra Levy was in intern for then-Representative Gary Condit, with whom it turned out she was having an affair. Though Gary Condit was never considered a suspect in Chandra Levy's murder, his political career was ruined when the truth of his relationship with Levy became public knowledge.

Defendant Ingmar Guandique, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, was convicted of assaulting two other women in Rock Creek Park. He has pleaded not guilty to killing Chandra Levy.

Gary Condit May Testify

Though not yet subpoenaed, Gary Condit said that he would testify in Ingmar Guandique's trial if asked.

Mr Condit said he and Ms Levy, 24, were friends and initially denied an affair, but the scandal helped end his political career after he was defeated in a primary in California.

Police said Mr Condit was not a suspect. He expects to be called as a witness at the trial, his spokesman said.
