Channel 4 TV, an obvious victim of the current economic crisis engulfing the United Kingdom due to advertising famine, extended its doctrine of self-righteousness by telecasting an execution video, allegedly committed by the Sri Lankan armed forces last week.

The Asian Tribune has obtained the expert-evidence to prove that the video has been doctored to cater for the right audience – the human-rights body who normally turns its back on human-wrongs and the league with vested interests those who are determined to tarnish the image of Sri Lanka at a time that it tries to stand on its feet.

The motive of the telecast by the particular TV channel is blindingly obvious: first of all, it needs stories to be seen as a big player among the TV audience in the UK, having been fed up with itself being in the shadow of the big players like the BSKYB and BBC; secondly, it has an axe to grind with the Government of Sri Lanka, since the unceremonious removal of its television crew in the middle of another questionable venture at the peak of the last phase of the war.

So, the bosses of the Channel 4 started doing what they normally are good at – mud-slinging at a nation which just began recovering from thirty years of endless suffering. It wants to bring the nation down to its knees both economically and politically – and then boast about the mantra ‘We told you so’.

However, its ambitious campaign has all the hall marks of an inauspicious start: it interviewed KP, the newly appointed head of the LTTE, only to see him being captured spectacularly at a spot in South East Asia; then the Channel 4 went on to publish an execution video, which an expert in the digital technology proves as a fake, for the Asian Tribune.

Siri Hewa, the former head of Cisco’s global broadcast and digital video practice, who currently serves as the chief architect of Optus’ Network Systems Design Broadcast and Satellite TV operation has uncovered evidence of doctoring in the original footage telecast by the Channel 4. It shows the extent to which the bosses of Channel 4 go in combining malice and ignorance in equal measure.

Siri Hewa analyses the startling findings for the Asain Tribune this way:

“Looking at the footage first thing I found strange was the high quality of the video, lack of cascading effects and motion blur that associate with mobile video coding. I got hold of the original video that was in QuickTime format as well as the other that was in AVI format and decided to put through various analysers to see origin of the video from the mobile source.

Looking at the results, I can say this video never came from a mobile phone, since the original video is of quite high standard and motion vectors were of high quality ( that never come from mobile phone) and I also found that the Tamilnet tried to put this video in 3GPP format which is associated with mobile phones.

This also give some clues since mobile phones or older got 3GPP format; I was involved with global Broadcast R&G for almost 25 years and Channel 4 used to have good people; it has gone for gutter journalism in recent years. Any sensible broadcast Engineer should have picked up the lack of cascading errors on the video since Channel 4 use Flash format on their web site.”

Channel 4 highlighted the need for an investigation for war crimes on the following grounds: the executioners were in Sri Lankan army uniform; and they spoke Sinhala.

It forgot the fact that this was the most ruthless terrorist organization in the world – banned in its own country and whole civilized world - which was prepared to send pregnant women and teenagers on suicide missions without any hesitation. So, the attempted portrayal of the tendency of such an outfit to respect conventions – violating the dress code of a conventional army - is something for a good laugh, not to for serious debate.

I REST MY CASE

Please read the whole story. Even those who were hyped about the video and had multiple posts on NP have been exposed. Right?

Good Bye NP. And Good Luck.

NP READERS ARE REQUESTED TO ADD PICS.

Faking is in in the era of economic crisis

The 41st frame shows the shot about to be fired and there is a 0.296 second delay in the sound in the 42nd frame which shows the shot already fired. The Army had conducted a field test and shot with a similar rifle in an open area using a mobile phone camera 4m away to record it. However the delay of 0.296 seconds was not observed. Calculations show that in order for the delay in sound to occur the mobile phone camera should be at a distance of 102.4m away from the scene of the shot. It is evident that that no such clear footage can be shot by a mobile phone camera placed at such a great distance. Therefore it should be concluded by his analysis that this video was a fake.

lalith, I have concerns about what is being said at The Asian Tribune as well. Has Channel 4 responded to this accusation?

3
Deepal

Channel 4 will. What do you say lalith? It has been technologically proved that the coolies doctored the vidoe. Tamilen Shari - Peen Shari

Rhonda, I think Channel 4 has been asked for explanation and from what I have heard, there are going to be Government to Government discussions about this matter.

Channel 4 will have to say something. However, Channel 4 does not claim that they are sure that the shooters are from the SL forces. That may work for them. But, it will be good for all of us to find out what is right.

When the original story came out there were as many as four posts of the same incident on NP. However, the posters, and those who recommended and commented those stories are eerily quiet now. Perhaps, they are waiting for answers too.

Let's wait and see.

Thanks.

Yes, let us wait and see. Thank you, lalith!

It is quite explicit that the camcorder video was transferred to a computer for editing and sound was dubbed later and gun shots were not in synchronism with the video and normally audio is always way ahead of the video since video processing takes time and in this case the audio is very late INDICATING a very amateurish video and audio editing.

Hello  live free,

I have stopped posting on NP. But, I will still looking at what some of these nameless cowards (definitely not you), say on NP. I'm sure you would like all those who expose minor cowards like you, to get out.

Remember, the war is over. Your darling Prabhakaran is dead. Get a life.

"justice may delay , but will.

Lalith is taking a well deserved break, after accomplishing the mission.

The battle will continue, dear KTTEs. Hang tight...!! What happening is NP is a very very small part of it. Moreover keyboards alone can't win battles.

"The Asian Tribune is a political Sri Lankan mouth piece" My knowledge is not sufficient to endorse or contest this statement. But The Island newspaper is definitely not a political mouth piece of anyone as far as one could see.  www.island.lk/2009/08/31/opinion1.html I don't know who this technical expert Siri Hewavitharana is. But an independent newspaper has published his observations, he in his analysis has given specific clues on CODEC names and coding standards. If one could be really bothered to do so, I guess it is not that difficult to determine the truth. After all, even Ch. 4 does not take the responsibility on the authenticity of this video ?

Channel 4 video: The doctored stripes of Tigers

A person claiming to be well versed in video coding has analyzed the video footages broadcast by Channel 4 recently and has written his comments to the local media today.

The person has said that this particular footage has not originated from a mobile phone, as claimed by Channel 4 and the other media which broadcast it. Instead he says that it had been a high quality footage, transferred into a low quality cut to portray that it had been shot via a mobile device.

The person who has head of R&D in a Major British Broadcasting company and later has worked in global companies like Cisco, Cable and Wireless and Ericsson, Siri Hewawitharana has written to the <?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ST1 />Island on his findings after careful analysis of the said video.

He says, “As a specialist in video coding I decided to look into this video footage and verify the technical features of the video against the claim that it came from a mobile phone. I was a head of R&D in a Major British Broadcasting company and later worked in global companies like Cisco and Cable and Wireless and Ericsson.

“Looking at the footage, the first thing I found strange was the high quality of the video and lack of cascading effects and motion blur associated with mobile video coding.

“I got hold of an original video that was on Quicktime format and another that was on AVI format and decide to put them through various analysers to see origin of the video from the mobile source.

“Looking at the results, I can say this video never came from a mobile phone since the original video is of quite a high standard and motion vectors were of high quality. (That never comes from a mobile phone. I also found that Tamilnet had tried to put this video on 3GPP format associated with mobile phones. This also gives some clues since mobile phones that are older are on 3GPP format, while all the new ones are of H-264 which is mpeg4 part 10.

“The original video is from a good quality video camera and later some one has tried to transfer this to 3GPP QT format where we can see some cascading errors.

“I was involved with global Broadcast R&G for almost 25 years and Ch-4 used to have good people but it has now gone down to gutter journalism. Any broadcast engineer should have picked the lack of cascading errors on the video since Ch-4 uses Flash format on their web site.” .

Controversial British TV video doctored –Sri Lanka Army

by Roel Raymond

The Army has said that investigations found that the controversial video aired on British television depicting alleged Army torture has been doctored.

Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara told Daily Mirror online that he was 100% sure that the video had been staged, and that evidence pointed towards the LTTE.

The Brigadier had explained that amongst other points that stood out as inconsistent to  the allegations against the Sri Lankan Army, was the fact that the shooter in the video who was wearing a Sri Lankan military uniform had no badges stating his rank or regiment and the fact that he had long hair - which went against military rules.

The Spokesman also noted that the men being shot at had short hair and could possibly be missing soldiers from the Sri Lankan Army.

We have already challenged the Channel 4 to prove the authenticity of the footage and these findings are very important for us support our claim. So we need more support from people all over the world to counter this mud slinging, anti-SL media campaign carry out by pro LTTE supporters.

"I prefer to believe Channel 4 as they do not lie as much. " Aha! So, they DO lie, ha? Now how can we be sure whether this is not one of their 'not-as-much' lies? One thing is for sure. Poor old Jonathan Miller made a goose of himself with his translation. I doubt very much JM knows any Sinhala and the accents in different parts in SL. He has been fed, fat, by the so called Journalists for Democracy in Sri Lanka who obviously are non-Sinhalese! tsk tsk!!

Dark skinned Sinhalese?

1
Lalith Perera

I myself as a Sinhalese have to say that Asian Tribune as a source is nothing more than rubbish. It is just a mouth piece of the Sri Lankan Government like "The Hindu" with Mr. Ram. Have anyone red anything what was criticising the Sri Lankan Goverment or Military from these sources? Have you? Let me know ... The GOSL seems to be an angel for these "sources".If this video is a fake like all the other allegations against the Sri Lankan Army, why are journalists terrorized and kept away from reporting? We Sinhalese must realise what is behind this. These things will one day turn against ourselfes. That is sure!  But let us follow apelike the "great" President Rajapaksa who has "liberated" this country. He might defeated the LTTE but he also defeated press freedom which is vital for a country.

Somebody is getting really itchy about the news. Like what somebody said, lets wait and see.Your opinion re: the Asian Tribune is respected. You know what?Read a little bit of Asian Tribune and Tamilnet each to get a balance.  ;)

I'm no great defender of Channel 4, and can't pretend to have the greatest insight into the issues involved here, but at least Channel 4 acknowledge that people have declared the film to be fake. Does this mean that it isn't fake? No. But the fact that they are willing to discuss the possibility and to explain their decision to air it does give them more credit than perhaps they are being given here.
