The United Nations special representative on extra-judicial killings says Sri Lanka needs to back up its claims that a gruesome execution video is a fake.

A journalists' freedom group released the video last week - and it appears to show two bound and blindfolded prisoners being shot in the back of the head as the gunmen laugh.

The footage, taken with a mobile phone camera, also shows another six men who appear to have been executed in this way.

The Sri Lankan army says the video is a fake, designed to discredit the security forces.

But special UN representative Philip Alston told Radio Australia's Connect Asia program: "The responsibility is on the government of Sri Lanka to demonstrate that a video of this quality and this apparent authenticity is, in fact, a fake.

Channel 4 video: The technical truth (By : Siri Hewawitharana)

As a specialist in video coding I decided to look into this video footage and verify the technical features of the video against the claim that it came from a mobile phone. I was a head of R&D in a Major British Broadcasting company and later worked in global companies like Cisco and Cable and Wireless and Ericsson.

Looking at the footage, the first thing I found strange was the high quality of the video and lack of cascading effects and motion blur associated with mobile video coding.

I got hold of an original video that was on Quicktime format and another that was on AVI format and decide to put them through various analysers to see origin of the video from the mobile source.

Looking at the results, I can say this video never came from a mobile phone since the original video is of quite a high standard and motion vectors were of high quality. (That never comes from a mobile phone). I also found that Tamilnet had tried to put this video on 3GPP format associated with mobile phones. This also gives some clues since mobile phones that are older are on 3GPP format, while all the new ones are of H-264 which is mpeg4 part 10.

The original video is from a good quality video camera and later some one has tried to transfer this to 3GPP QT format where we can see some cascading errors.

I was involved with global Broadcast R&G for almost 25 years and Ch-4 used to have good people but it has now gone down to gutter journalism. Any broadcast engineer should have picked the lack of cascading errors on the video since Ch-4 uses Flash format on their web site.

This particular video may be a fake, all the other that came to news channels seems to be authentic though.

There was a fake video about Gaza as well as the Israeli bomb that area, however, the reality ended up being worth then the fake Video.

Unfortunately, the reality seems to be worst than the fake video (if it is) in Sri Lanka's case as well.

Sorry for my ignorance, a technical question please. Today, if I produce a video clip of,  say; some Englishman commiting a rape and claim "This is what Gordon Brown does in his spare time !", is it me who should prove the authanticity of my video or should Mr Brown come forward and prove my video is a fake ?

In a court of law Mr. Brown would have to prove that the video is a fake and not the one that made the video.

This would be the case on even in Sri Lanka Courts.

So, if Sri Lanka proves that this video is a fake, where do they go from there?

Since Channel 4 is operating in the UK it would have to be taken to a UK court, if that fails then the International Court would be the best option.

I think the proof of the video being a fake is enough punishment for Channel 4 and just imagine the dent it would make in its credibility.

International Court proceedings will be a long drawn out affair. The best thing is to let the world know what Channel 4 is, either way.

The 41st frame shows the shot about to be fired and there is a 0.296 second delay in the sound in the 42nd frame which shows the shot already fired. The Army had conducted a field test and shot with a similar rifle in an open area using a mobile phone camera 4m away to record it. However the delay of 0.296 seconds was not observed. Calculations show that in order for the delay in sound to occur the mobile phone camera should be at a distance of 102.4m away from the scene of the shot. It is evident that that no such clear footage can be shot by a mobile phone camera placed at such a great distance. Therefore it should be concluded by his analysis that this video was a fake.

Government to take legal action against Channel 4

It is quite explicit that the camcorder video was transferred to a computer for editing and sound was dubbed later and gun shots were not in synchronism with the video and normally audio is always way ahead of the video since video processing takes time and in this case the audio is very late INDICATING a very amateurish video and audio editing.

Independent Investigations show that Channel 4 footage is Fake

The original Channel 4 video, before it was altered, doctored and shown by the rogue Channel.  The dialog is in Tamil and it is believed that those killed are captured soldiers who were Sinhala teachers to LTTE cadres

The dialogue is in Tamil. Those who know Tamil will know what went on.
