Chaos in largest Pakistan province after contentious court ruling
Pakistan's largest province, Punjab, has plunged into chaos after a court ruling declaring former PM Nawaz Sharif and former Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, as heavy contingents have been deployed at the provincial assembly building to bar the members from entering the premises while large-scale reshuffling of bureaucracy is in progress following the imposition of governor's rule in the province for two months.
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court of Pakistan passed a controversial ruling declaring the Sharif brothers, the most popular leaders in the country at the moment, ineligible for contesting an election.
LAHORE: The clashes between PML-N members Punjab Assembly and police underway in front of assembly building as police officials started members taken into custody.
Heavy police contingents have been deployed outside Punjab Assembly and members have been barred to attend the session.
According to reports, main gate of Punjab Assembly has been closed. PML-N members have tried to crush the gate of the assembly after which barriers have been placed at the entry and exit routes.
Police have also tortured the women members of PML-N and large numbers of women police contingents were also present to arrest the women assembly members.
The clashes between PML-N members and police underway till the last reports came in.
The session of assembly had been called on the requisition of PML-N. Spokesman of Governor Punjab said only governor would summon the session after imposition of governor rule, therefore, Punjab assembly’s session is unconstitutional and illegal.
Large-scale reshuffling of the bureaucracy in the province is in progress after the imposition of federal or governor's rule in the province following disqualification of former chief minister Shahbaz Sharif.
ISLAMABAD: Following the imposition of the Governor’s Rule in the Punjab, various high officials have been made OSD besides the transfer of IG-Punjab Police and Chief Secretary Punjab, posted during the regime of former Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif.
According to sources, Among those transferred late night were CPO Rawalpindi Mohammad Iqbal Khan, RPO Gujranwala Zulfiqar Cheema, Chairman PND Mohammad Sami, Additional Chief Secretary Javed Aslam, Secretary I & C Umar Rasool, Secretary Communications Fawad Hussain, Secretary to Chief Minister Dr Tauqeer, Secretary Coordination Tauqeer Ajmal Khan. All these officers have been made OSD.
The task force committees formed during the regime of Shahbaz Sharif have also been abolished.
Sources said that more transfers and postings are likely to be made in the government institutions.
