Chardon High School Shooting February 27, 2012: 5 Shot (Video)
Shooting at Chardon High School in Ohio: 2 Killed, 3 Wounded
Two students were killed and three more were wounded in a shooting at Chardon High School in Chardon, Ohio. The shooter, believed to be a student, opened fire with a handgun in the cafeteria at around 8am on February 27, 2012.
The five injured students were taken to nearby hospitals by ambulance and helicopter. Two of the students have since died. According to WKYC-TV, the gunman was chased from the school and turned himself in to bystanders.
A SWAT team was deployed to Chardon High School, even as basic details of the shooting emerge. According to one student, another student talked about bringing a gun to school, but nobody believed him. It's not clear if that's the shooter or not.
The name of the Chardon High School shooter has not yet been released, but one name is already circulating online: TJ Lane. A producer for CBS has been compiling info on TJ Lane, including confirming that he posted pictures of himself posing with guns online.
Aside from the identity of the shooting suspect, there was also confusion about an alleged photo of TJ Lane. While Thomas Lane was indeed named by eyewitnesses as the alleged shooter, the images of a young man posing with handguns do not apparently depict TJ Lane.
School buses, yet to arrive at the school, were turned around, and school has been canceled for the day across the entire Chardon Local School District.
"As of 9:00 AM the alleged sole CHS gunman is in custody and Chardon High School students are being moved by safety forces to Maple Elementary. Parents or legal guardians can pick up their students up any time. Chardon Middle School students are also being released to parents."
