Charges of fraud in Zimbabwe vote

The votes haven't even been counted yet and already there are charges of fraud floating in the air.

Mugabe, in power since independence from Britain in 1980,faced his strongest challenge in Saturday's election, withveteran opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai and ruling ZANU-PFparty defector Simba Makoni exploiting widespread misery causedby the wrecked economy.

As polls closed, Tsvangirai's MDC party said their votersand officials had been turned away from polling stations anderasable voting ink was used to enable fraud by governmentsupporters.

Combined with inflated voter rolls and the printing of 3million surplus ballot papers, this "ensures that there will bemultiple voting," said MDC secretary-general Tendai Biti.

Observers from the Pan-African parliament said in a letterto the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission that they had found morethan 8,000 non-existent people registered on a piece of emptyland in a Harare constituency.

Biti said the MDC had also found "ghost voters" in Harare.

Many Zimbabweans were desperate for change to end thecountry's economic misery.

The once-prosperous nation is suffering the world's highestinflation rate at more than 100,000 percent, chronic shortagesof food and fuel and a rampant HIV/AIDS epidemic that hascontributed to a steep decline in life expectancy.

Mugabe blames the collapse on Western sanctions.

Interesting Vinny, thanks. I wonder if they can claim victory this early on though? I will have to watch for results as they come in...

Vinny

They are claiming victory based on early results I too wonder if it's a bit soon or even if they will be allowed a victory if they win.

amyjudd

I wonder that too...

Here's what the Guardian are reporting.

Zimbabwe's opposition party claimed an overwhelming victory against President Robert Mugabe in yesterday's presidential election, saying that the flow of results showed its candidate, Morgan Tsvangirai, had 'massacred' the ruling Zanu-PF party.

The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) defied a government ban on pre-empting the official announcement of the election results and released the count from polling stations that showed Tsvangirai beating the man who has ruled Zimbabwe for 28 years, even in the president's home territory of Mashonaland.

'We've won this election,' said Tendai Biti, the MDC's secretary-general. 'The results coming in show that in our traditional strongholds we are massacring them. In Mugabe's traditional strongholds they are doing very badly. There is no way Mugabe can claim victory unless it is through fraud. He has lost this election.'
