Charles Rangel has announed that he is stepping down from his powerful position as chair of the Congressional Ways and Means Committee as the Harlem Congressman from New York became the focus of an ethics investigation.
Charles Rangel sent a leave of absence request to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“My chairmanship is bringing so much attention to the press, and in order to avoid my colleagues having to defend me during their elections, I have this morning sent a letter [to Ms Pelosi],” Mr Rangel told reporters at a short press conference on Wednesday morning.
Rep Rangel became the focus of an investigation after it was revealed that his staff accepted improper gifts in the form of corporate travel reimbursements and with mid-terms elections looming the popular and powerful 79 year old Rangel was becoming a distraction to House Democrats.
78 year old California democrat Pete Stark is apparently stepping in as the new temporary chair of the Ways and Means Committee
Stark, 78, “will be stepping in on a temporary basis,” Representative Shelley Berkley, a Nevada Democrat, said as she left a meeting of Democratic leaders. She said Rangel was stepping aside “for all the right reasons” and she hopes he is exonerated by the ethics committee.
