Chennai Sangamam
The third edition of " Chennai Sangamam" - wrapped up yesterday, and the echos of the thundering drums still revebrates.
For the past three years " Tamil Maiyam" has spearheaded the organisation of this unique festival, the only secular festival in India, that belongs to all the people, and one that is so grand in scale but also accesible. This year around 4,000 performers performed in various public spaces around the city, Parks, schools and beaches, and since the festival conicides with "Pongal" - an harvest festival- people thronged the venues to watch the performances.
Most of the performances were of traditional folk art forms which are now seeing a new revival. The majority of the people who are in chennai now have their roots in villages around Tamil Nadu, and for them, this festival bring back fond memories of their childhod in the village and to the young blood of chennai, this is an energetic event that is all inclusive.
This years events included Nayyandi Melam, Kāvadi, Mayilattam, Kaliyal Āttam, Karagattam, Kokillikattai, Nayattam, Pachakalli & Pavalakalli, Mādattam, Singara Chendai, Dance, Athi Thamilar Group Dance & Arts, Bommalattam, Karagam, Kāvadi, Devarattam, Udukaiyadi, Chendai Melam, Silambattam, Bommaigal Nadanam, Kathamba Nigazhvu, Folk Songs.
