NP Rank:
China to Back North Korea Sanctions
China is believed to be on board with U.S.'s attempt to impose tougher sanctions on North Korea for its nuclear-bomb test and missile launches.
“I believe China is on board, together with the major countries of the Security Council,” Ban, 64, said today during an interview with Bloomberg News. “I am confident that they will come out with unified and strong measures to ensure there are no further such actions by North Korea.”
UN Chief Ban Ki-moon is referred to his efforts in directing world's attention to important issues and states he has no political ambitions in South Korea.
Ban, saying he has no political ambitions in South Korea, suggested he would be a candidate for a second term as UN chief beginning in 2012. He pointed to his efforts to direct world attention to suffering after disasters such as the cyclone that hit Myanmar last year and the war in Sri Lanka.
Mr. Ki-moon is very much concerned about the North Korea's threat to South Korea and the world and hoping unified voice at the UN Security Council against the North Korea's actions.
Ban said he was “very much concerned” about the threat posed to his native country and the world by North Korea. The North set off a nuclear weapon in a test on May 25 and followed it with short-range missile launches.
“This goes beyond the Korean peninsula,” Ban said of North Korea’s nuclear challenge. “This has very serious negative implications to global nuclear non-proliferation issues. Therefore, the Security Council should send a strong, unified and firm message.”
Further he welcomed the committments of China and US in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
China also is making a positive contribution to talks on a climate change treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012, Ban said. The government in Beijing is “quite serious” and there is “not a big gulf” between its commitment to clean energy and U.S. proposals to cut greenhouse gas emissions, he said.
...
Ban said that while U.S. proposals to cut greenhouse gases fall short of UN targets, he is pleased with President Barack Obama’s commitment to the issue.
“I don’t want to criticize,” Ban said. “Let us be realistic. They joined late. The whole world is looking to the U.S. for leadership and they are clearly taking a leadership role.”

While it might be a good sign that China has joined the international community in one voice, but the concern is this action might also encourage NK to become even more hardened in its position.
NK is undergoing a mini-internal tug between the hardliners and moderate ones.
There is the vexing issue of Euna Lee and Laura Ling.

Well put, Pythiian. There is no direct way to do the right thing here, only murky probabilities and reactions and counter-reactions that have to calculated in what can never an exact science.
The hard-liners have to be contained, though. Hopefully, somebody ratonal in the hard-liner group will convince others to give him the power and overthrow the madman.

Its all about power and egos. Misguided war of words.

Even though I think actions are necessary to hopefully stop NK aggressions, I am not convinced that tougher sanctions will have the intended outcome. NKs are already suffering from a severe food shortage, any further restrictions on the NK economy could have tremendous results, especially since the NK government has shown no interest in the 'normal' citizens.

I think all had just about enough of NK by now and China should be given carte blanche and allowed to deal with them as it pleases.

China is not about to go along with sanctions and watch N. Korean's exodus into China mainland for food. It is not going to happen. N. Korea is not going to become another Iraq. The difference is N. Korea is now a Nuclear Power... So why is it....S. Korea has nuclear weapons with their association with the US, and China has nuclear weapons to the North....just who is there to give N. Korea it's security? Certainly not China, and certainly not the US.
N. Korea has this new bomb and everyone is ganging up on them....when they have thousands of them in their own stock munition yards. Talk about hypocrisy and pointing fingers. So how come the US doesn't reduce its stock pile down to the number N. Korea has at the moment? And what about China, and Russia nuclear stock piles?
If anything N. Korea has only reminded the rest of the world to the neglect of their own association in reducing the nuclear threat in the world. Certainly there have been no world meetings to globally reduce and end nuclear weapon stock piles, with verification.
I would say stop pointing fingers USA...and pay attention to your own back yard for a change.
All you will do is place sanctions and economic hardship on poor people, who don't want to be threatened with US bombs pointed at them.. What don't you understand about that Hillary? The US has proved time and time again how they ignore international laws, and invade other countries, after maliciously attacking their own city in New York on Sept. 11. The outside world is going to believe the US is their buddy when they kill their own people just for the sake of gaining money for their military superiority, and domination across the globe? You have to be pretty naive to believe the world is going to cower to US demands.
You still have not apologized to Japan for dropping those 2 Bombs on Civilians, instead of the Japanese Military. You still have not given Japan its freedom... Everyone thinks Japan having Nuclear Weapons is a bad thing..but it is probably a good thing so they are free from the US occupation.
Let's not forget who started this Atomic Bomb nightmare.....Prescott Bush, Oppenheimer, Einstein, and the rest of the Roosevelt USA Manhattan Project.. If anyone should be under sanctions it needs to be the USA...and the way things look in the USA right now....is a clear indication...if you want a profitable and healthy USA...the USA better start admitting its crimes and apologizing, and seeking to make ammends for its wrecklessness and gun slinging attitude in the world. First would be to get out of Japan, Iraq, and Afghanistan.....and then to free all Americans from the bondage they go through by being forced to support your crony Free Society Military Establishment.
