Joe McDonald of the Associated Press is reporting that a Chinese officials has said that 19 people have been detained in connection with tainted powder that was linked to kidney stones in hundreds of infants.
Deputy Provincial Gov. Yang Chongxion says authorities are also questioning 78 people about how the banned chemical melamine was added to milk used by a major dairy.
Yang said that he did not have any details regarding the identities of those that were detained. Officials have siad that investigators are looking into whether the farmers added melamine to milk, which is a violation of Chinese safety standards. Melamine is a chemical that is used to make plastics, glues, and other products.
On Saturday, the Chinese health minister said that a small amount of tainted milk powerd had been exported to China, though none went to any other foreign markets. Officials say that 432 babies had kidney stones after drinking the contaminated milk powder.
"We will severely punish and discipline those people and workers who have acted illegally," Gao said.
Officials are saying that China's cabinet has ordered free medical care for all children that are affected by the tainted milk. They added that a series of lawsuits had been brought against Sanlu for allegedly making tainted milk powder since March 2008.
