Chinese authorities have detained Liu Shaokan for posting on the Web photographs of schools that collapsed during the Sichuan earthquake earlier this year. Officials have been trying to stifle claims that the schools were poorly built. Liu has reportedly been sent for a year of "re-education through labor." The government can send people to such "re-education" for up to four years without a trial or even levying formal charges against them.
