China’s 21st Century War to Destroy the U.S. | We Are Losing!
Quote, "China is to increase official military spending by almost 15 per cent this year as it seeks to upgrade its smart technology and improve the living standards of its soldiers."
The story suggests the U.S. believes China's military expenditures to be, in reality, significantly higher - thanks to hidden (but major) arms purchases from our Russian friends - kept off the radar and below the balance sheet.
Such press stories rarely offer insight into the bigger picture / a comparative essay of Chinese military expenditure (and that of all nations) versus to THE military industrial complex; the great U.S. 'Defense' Budget - and you need to wonder why!
In simple terms; according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute {SPIRRI} - (page 10) World military expenditure in 2007 was $1.34 Trillion, a 6% increase over 2006 - which is a measly 2.5% of the World's GDP. The U.S.'s military spending is a staggering 45% of the World's total spending, followed by the U.K., China, France and Japan with a lowly 4-5% each.
So, the U.S. provides 45% of world military expenditure and, questionably, our biggest military foe / future adversary / potential replacement hyper-power, China, spends a pathetic 5%. If the U.S. is correct and China surreptitiously spends more (under the table) then even if we double China's spending estimate to a massive 10% of world spending ... the U.S. still offers more than 4 times the military spending habit for its money.
So what's the point?
China cares not for hypersonic cruising stealthy dual-purpose fighter bombers than can penetrate complex enemy radar whilst deploying a lethal payload of multiple-headed laser guided missiles down bad-guy chimneys and through the patio doors of high profile despotic wannabe-dictators typically armed by slightly-used tin-plated Russian-made kalashnikov rifles.
China does not have a defense industry stocked at CEO and executive board level by former Pentagon Generals equipped with canny Lobbyist ambitions to milk and fleece the 'system' - the Pentagon, Senate Committees - (the tax-payer) - weapons systems ultimately designed, built, sold and deployed throughout U.S. armed forces for a bygone era of Soviet expansionism and Cold War detente.
No. Our Sinonese trade partners - our bankers - our Eastern Allies - are happy to spend a few thousand dollars on a few laptops in comparison to the billions spent by the U.S. on a new Joint Strike Fighter Stealth Plane - F-35B Lightning.
China arms its 21st century army with technology tools (PCs / networking) to infiltrate and destroy the enemy (the West's) infrastructure with the painfully difficult to trace tactics of cyber warfare. The U.S. can gain brownie points for surgical targeting of enemy military targets based on frequently flawed military intelligence and an absolutely shite political process but China wins the bigger picture by exploiting our weaknesses right under our noses.
China, it is reported, has the ambition and the purported ability to target an aircraft carrier battle group - the pride, the tip of the spear of U.S. regional military might - through a dedicated cyber attack by formerly Western educated military hackers fueled by Chinese nationalism.
The Chinese are building whole military divisions for the sole purpose of cyber-warfare. The ability to target the vast U.S. industrial infrastructure, communications, power stations, water purification plants, hospitals and civil government. To deny its enemy - the U.S. - with the ability to sustain day to day operations, yet alone the will to fight a 'conventional' (or nuclear?) war.
Tim Reid - of the Times newspaper - wrote this engaging opening to an often quoted and rarely refuted article entitled "China's cyber army is preparing to march on America, says Pentagon."
Chinese military hackers have prepared a detailed plan to disable America’s aircraft battle carrier fleet with a devastating cyber attack, according to a Pentagon report obtained by The Times.
The blueprint for such an assault, drawn up by two hackers working for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), is part of an aggressive push by Beijing to achieve “electronic dominance” over each of its global rivals by 2050, particularly the US, Britain, Russia and South Korea.
The Chinese are continually probing our military, our industrial and political networks and those of our allies. Germany's Chancellor Anegla Merkel had to smile and shake hands with the Chinese Premier during a visit in August of 2007 whilst German newspapers brandished evidence of Chinese espionage and cyber attacks on Merkel's very political office.
The U.S. political machine - during the 2008 Presidential campaign - (of both political parties) - for Obama and McCain - became the ultimate targets for Chinese cyber-espionage. Espionage that included data theft, surveillance and political engineering designed to improve China's position and ability to counter future U.S. foreign policy initiatives.
China's hackers, spies, and a broad web of intelligence resources are embedded throughout U.S. society; across dummy corporations, foreign students, tourists, and businessmen - each armed with specific objectives including the theft of industrial and military secrets that can improve China's ability to wage and win a 21st century war against the U.S.
Report are report, Congressional committee hearing after hearing and warning after warning are wasted on either the incompetent or just blatantly corrupt ears of our great leaders and nothing appears to shake their nerves or tighten their resolve to combat this underground war being waged one-sided against the U.S. right here and right now.
The U.S. is losing the war and nobody seems to give a damn.

I think Russia is more worried then any one else. The US is already off the radar by now. It is between China, India and Russia now.

Perhaps but I think it's more about the very intertwined balance of power between China and the U.S.
IF this U.S. Consumer continues to suffer and a true depression ensues ... China will fail.
If China's economic engine fails - social unrest WILL spread. China's one Joker is the ugly ambitions of Nationalism. With Economic Mutually Assured Destruction (of China dumping U.S. T-Bonds = death of U.S. = death of China's revenue stream) out of the picture ... the next option is to revert to distrust and, therefore, conflict.
The U.S. homeland does not have the stomach for a society crippled by cyber warefare! No power, no water, no communications ... = pure anarchy. It is suggested China could very well unleash such a Hell. The response from the U.S.? Utter Nuclear Destruction.
Not a pretty prospect.
Russia? a technological backwater. India? A service industry enpowered by a greedy and short-term viewed U.S. corporate stinkpot of stupidity through outsourcing.
Sorry mate to be brutal. Just my ugly two cents +/- right or wrong perspective.

China could only fail would it focus on the US alone, wish it does not do. China focuses on Africa and South America, the US are seen as a bonus and where a sort of starting block.
China and Russia have to some extend already accepted the end of the US as we knew it over the last 50 years.
Japan and Korea are in trouble if the US fall apart because they have build every thing to accommodate the US rather then diversify and adapt to the new realities as most did since the 1970s. India will be fine as so will Russia be and Brazil. Europe for the most part will hurt a little but recover soon since they are deeply involved globally and the trade with the US has become a steadily smaller portion over the past two decades. Especially Germany has focused on the East since the fall of the USSR. Trade is now with the East for the larger part.
Who is hurting in Europe are some Banks and investors that put money into the US and now suit the US for Billions.
Briton is in bad shape since it got involved with the US to deeply over the past two decades and Japan is in very bad shape as well due to the same reason.

Ironically, the US often creates the very threats it fears by its build-up of military defences around the "enemy". In fact, it has built up the alliances of countries that surround China, and given them huge defence support, thus forcing China to be on the defensive. It has done this for years.

The total principle has been on the drawing board for some time. Cyber warfare is only the lead up as like soften the targets before sending in the armor and troops.
The next step is to knock out the enemies electronics with specially designed missiles that carry an electronic device to neutralize the enemies electronics including even civilian power generators and house hold electrical appliances. This just leave conventional military forces to attend with by using temporary bio and chemical s delivered by missiles.
Nukes are out of fashion we are looking at Science fiction becoming a reality. But of course China is annoyed because of being placed into check mate that as stopped or slowed down development of its manufacturing infrastructure. China oil and gas plans piping fuel directly from the middle east and from the Baltic was stopped by the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Then now the pre-planned financial meltdown and hype has slowed down the cash flow to China.
Don't worry they are not going to war just flexing another muscle because they have been placed into check. Also I would say that much of that US 3.5 trillion was backed by $US securities in Overseas banks in Europe and the middle east.
Lets all blame Gordon Brown for the nifty plan that's given USA a decade or two more before a fresh attempt is taken to seize world financial power. China is in grief.
Obama is master of the universe for a while at least. And now yours and my bank account is an open book to big brother. The multi-corperates have been stabbed in the back by their own political puppets and now have to come clean with tax accessments and all electronic transaction to off shore banks are open to government auditors.

Interesting article. The Chinese government just recently released their own figure for expansions in mllitary spending. Their claim is that the defence budget will only increase by 14.9%, and that most of the extra money will go to salary increases for enlisted soldiers (link is to my own website):

While I feel that widespread military and industrial espionage is a major source of concern, I don't think the United States - or the West in general, should be too concerned about China's rapid ascent in power. We live in a completely different world now, and national glory by means of rapacious conquest or expansion is no longer possible. Globalization and expanded trade links have made it a self-defeating proposition for major powers to attack each other, since this harms their own economic interests.
This was the whole point of the E.U. - to stop the incessant bickering and belligerence between European nation-states by forming a single economic block and inducing them to trade with each other, thus bringing about peace and stability. It was also an observation made by early Chinese philosophers prior to the unification of the country under a single empire - you don't fight against people who buy your own products.

I think another factor you don't mention is, although our budget is significantly higher you fail to realize that we pay ALOT more per soldier than other countries. A pay of 25000 a soldier doesn;t seem alot, however compared to our chinese counterpart its probably much higher, in the ballpark of 5 times higher. We need a NATO force to combat the chinese and Russian cyber warfare units. We've seen Russia's ability to strike in Georgia and other ex Soviet bloc countries through cyber attacks.

Heads up guys - The united states only accounts for 5% of China's GDP. They can live without us, and We can just as well live without their shitty products, shitty quality, and watered down Chinese culture. The United States should launch its own cyber pranks against the peoples republic of egg foo yung ching chang chung. Maybe they are just mad that their women like big american "wangs" if you know what I mean...

It is idiots like Greg B that shows the western hubris knows no bounds. China has already won. The Chinese have been weaving this revenge since the 1800s after the British colonization of Northern China. The Western policy of carving of the Chinese Melon in 1890s-1949 ended with the victory of the nationalist Communist Army which vowed to protect China and will avenge the deeds in the west.
The article miss the point as well, yes China's military is built with Cyber warfare as one of its arsenals, but the Chinese military is borne out of assymetric warfare, aka. using the weak against the strong. The Chinese kicked the westerners and its puppets through insurgency tactics. Mao, one of the greatest generals of all time, introduced suicide bombers to IEDs long before the Iraqis and the Afghanis were implementing them. He taught his tactics to Ho Chi Mihn, Kim Ill Song down to Che Guevarra and Fidel Castro. These lessons are now being used by all sorts of Motley crew rebels around the world which have so far proven to have defeated first rate armies. China continues its long stand in assymetrical warfare and this is how their military tactics are built. Aside from cyber warfare, China's air force have revamped old migs into EMP-nuclear armed death drones that will destroy anyone who tried to shoot it down yet will also wiped carrier groups in kamakaze fashion.
Despite all the military, people still miss the whole point in the accupuncture shot against the west. China is very astute and patient, it learns and study its enemy and when the sword of domiciles is ready to go, it hits it where it hurts the most and there will be no way they can get up.
China's main weapon is its economy. China runs its economy like a warfare. Contrary to the idiots of the West, China can live without the west but the West CANNOT live without China especially now. China used its debt lending as the sword of domiciles. The western addiction to credit is the opium China is using as its revenge against the west. When China yanked out the credit to Western banks as retaliation to Western insolence against China (via Tibet and olympic protest) last August. Western banks collapse like dominoes, from Lehman, Citi, Aig, UBS, RBS... you name the acronyms. Only after Hilary Clinton signed off the eminent Domain of California to China early this year, that the Chinese resume the credit faucet which is now flooding the stock market as green shoots. One thing the west should remember, never pissed off your banker who already have you on your throughs.
Just like the Communist victory of the civil war shows (soon to be concluded with Taiwan eventual surrender to the mainland via peaceful unification which is already underway as Taiwan already officially accepted the one economy pact, accepted pandas named reunion and officially ties its economy with the Yuan via $30 Billion bailout of Taiwan stock market by the mainland) patience is a virtue.
China knows what it is doing, their politicians are well schooled unlike western politicians. As the west continues to ignore Chinese warnings, the next dreaded shot is already underway, the decoupling of the world economy. The decoupling will result to the death of the dollar as the currency reserve. China now trades with all members of the SCO, ASEAN and MERCUSUR area nations with their own currency. The birth of the Copper standard next year backing the Chinese Yuan plus the gold/oil backed Khaleeji will be the nail in the coffin to the US dollar and ultimately this will be the death of the west.
China will soon start carving out the Western melon as its sweet revenge. Mark my words on this.
