Govt Moves To Save Condemned Kenyans

China is showing no mercy to African Nationals when it comes to drug smuggling. Those convicted are being sentenced to death.

On April 23, Chibuzor Ezekwem, a Nigerian national, was executed for trafficking hard drugs.

In mid-May, a 38-year-old Zambian businesswoman was convicted of smuggling 2.5 kilograms of heroin.

“She will be put to death by a firing squad…” confirmed John Nyawali, Public Relations Officer for Zambia’s Drug Enforcement Commission.

Now, only weeks later, China has sentenced five Kenyans, aged 25-57, to die for drug trafficking.

Officials in both Zambia and Kenya have pledged to work to save the lives of those on death row.

Zambia’s government spokesperson, Ronnie Shikapwasha said, “The embassy in China has been alerted to the case and is following it up.”

However, he noted that all Zambia can do is try to get the sentence reduced from death to life behind bars, hopefully to be served in Zambia.

After the government was criticized for failure to support its citizens, Kenya’s Foreign Minister, Moses Wetangula, also announced the country’s intentions to negotiate.

“I intend to visit China to see how we can commute the death sentences to life [imprisonment] and see how we can exchange prisoners so that they can serve their sentences in Kenya,” he said.

But government involvement proved useless in the case of Mr. Ezekwem. “The Mission's plea for mitigation of the death sentence was rejected and the death sentence passed on him was, sadly, eventually carried out in accordance with the Laws of the People's Republic of China”, said a statement released by the Director of Public Communications Division at Nigeria’s Embassy in China.

China does not release statistics of the number of people it executes each year, so the total number of Africans killed for drug trafficking is unknown. The problem of statistics is also exacerbated by the fact that many Africans travel abroad with fake documents and therefore they do not register with their embassies.

It is, however, known that most of those currently on death row for drug trafficking are due to be executed by firing squad, which means they will be shot in the back of the head at close range with a hollow tipped bullet.

There are criminals even in the US they would face harsh justice.

China is upholding its laws.

Paschen, thanks for reading, commenting, and for the recommendation! I understand that China is upholding its laws. Nevertheless, I am opposed to the executions (death penalty).

I am opposed the the death penalty as well, however we do have a great many countires still enforcing this today, including the US, Japan and Thailand.

Meaning that China is not doing any thing worth nor better then other countries by upholding its laws.

The Drug traffickers did know what they where getting them self into if cough, they committed a crime and where sentenced to death.

I would rather have them sentenced to hard labour for life my self.

We can not condone China here and make the criminals look like poor little Lambs either. Should China abolish the death penalty? Well Yes, so should the US and Japan.

Thanks, Paschen. Your points are well-taken!

I could not understand the significance of the heading of this story. Is there any report says that China behave  differently with drug smugglers from other continents? Since most of this drug runners are going abroad with fake papers , obviously they know what they are doing. Why the respective governments should worry about them at all in the first place?

It is their choice, right?

agent, I am not sure what you mean when you state, "I could not understand the significance of the heading of this story." I think it is self-explanatory:) But, please, feel free to enlighten me:).

I have not been able to locate any report that says China is behaving differently with drug smugglers from other continents. What I did locate however is, "China hits back with report on U.S. human rights record." I'm sharing it here because it does have relevance for US citizens who may not otherwise come across it.

Yes, it is their choice. However, execution is not the answer.

He he..

Sorry for the confusion,Rhonda. Maybe I did not express myself correctly..!

What I wanted to say is that when I saw the heading for the first time I thought that this story is about  to racism against Africans in China. So obviously they might be treating people from other continents in a different way. For example they don't execute Asians / Europeans, but execute every African drug dealer they catch. Then again I did not see anything like that either in the story, or in the highlighted articles.

So just thought loudly.. :-)

Well, about the death sentence, smuggling of drugs to any country is just like waging war against that country.  Execution of the enemy who tries to kill a  citizen is the duty and the right of any country.

.Agent., "So just thought loudly.. :-)" --- I am glad you did:). However, I can never be in agreement with, "Execution of the enemy who tries to kill a  citizen is the duty and the right of any country."

Let me share a personal story:):

I struggled with the decision to oppose or consent to the death penalty for a very long time. In the final analysis, and after sharing my struggle with others, I was 'helped' to 'see' that I do not make the world a better place by following the executioners (or oppressors, etc.), I become like them. And PLEASE do not take anything I've said on a personal level:). It's just something to think about:).

Hi Rhonda,

Hey, never...! Our experiences do play a major role in making what we and our opinions are. I know people - who are really brilliant - lost the footing of life because of drugs. The stories we get to know through the media too are not much different either. Anyone who does anything with drugs is a murderer / killer. I feel execution would be the right way.

But what the heck, our opinion / feeling may change if we have another experience. Can't say anything for sure about the most complex species called "homo sapiens".

.Agent.

PS: Once upon a time me too used to believe that Soviet Union is the solution for all the problems the world faced. LOL..!

"Hey, never...!"

Thank you, .Agent.! I'm breathing a sigh of relief right now:). And, yes, "Our experiences do play a major role in making what we and our opinions are."--- it is never easy!

when China carries out an execution with a bullet to the head, they bill the family for the cost of the bullet, which of cause won't happen with these foreign nationals.

China is carrying out less executions by bullet-to-the-head because the organs can't be harvested and sold for transplants which is a very lucrative source of income.

China has introduced mobile execution trucks were the death sentence is by lethal injection. The trucks are fully equipped with an operating table so that the organs of the deceased can be removed immediately and sold on the world market.

Here is a couple of links for those who find it hard to believe.

http://www.nowpublic.com/crime/chinas-execution-vans-bringing-show-village-near-you

The bodies/organs of death row inmates belong to the state but the family will receive the left-overs so that the Chinese state avoids the cost of it's disposal and to maximize the profit of the sale of the organs.

Of cause, China is acting within its own laws just like it's stated in other comments here, so it must be just fine????

Marge, thank you for reading and commenting. I don't find any of it, "hard to believe", and thank you for the links provided.

China must be tough: they do not want to end up like the US, with drug gangs everywhere and whole areas becoming no-go zones run by these gangs. I think the death penalty is the most humane option: it is clean and it gets the drug dealer out of the community and cuts the cost to society. You only have to watch The Wire to see how much money and life is wasted with the US approach.
