Amnesty International in Australia built a representation of China's Internet Firewall. The 20 meter golden wall held cardboard bricks and information panels about th issues of online censorship in China. All across Australia, the public have been tearing down walls. Behind each 'brick' is an action card directed to either Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, or Chinese net providers, Baidu and Sohu.
We commenced our tour in Melbourne on the 100 day countdown to the Games and we were in Sydney's Martin Place for the 10 day countdown. Walls have been torn down in capital cities, in country towns, regional centres, shopping malls, universities and schools have been building their own walls to tear down.
Thanks to the hard work of hundreds of amazing volunteers (and our tireless Amnesty staff), these golden walls attracted the attention and interest of around 20,000 people. Together we are calling on internet companies to end their role in censorship in China.
At uncensor.com.au you can order a Do It Yourself wall kit!
