Chinese babies named 'Olympic Games'

More than 4,000 children in China have been given the name Aoyun, meaning Olympic Games, in the past 15 years.

The rise in popularity of the name is seen as a sign of support for the Games being staged in August in Beijing.

Officials in charge of identity cards say that more than 92% of the 4,104 registered Aoyuns are boys.

It is not uncommon for Chinese children to be given names of common events and popular slogans - such as Defend China, Build the Nation and Space Travel.

Hello flight737,

I hate to say that the practice is ridiculous, especially when Americans' have been known to do almost the same thing.

How about Brick for a name?

Remember what Christie Brinkley named her son?  "Sailor Lee"

David Bowie named his son Zowie Bowie ...

Bono of course called his son/daughter (I forget which!) Memphis Eve

Nick Cage called his son Kal-el - I kid you NOT!  The name being Superman's "real name" when he was on Krypton.

Ving Rhames (sigh) Reign Beau. I had to say that a couple of times to actually get it ... what a shame for the boy.

These are not the only ones, there are too many to count, but these are the ones that quickly came to mind.

Good story, well done!

Be fair now... Bowie is not American  but British. :)

Nothing is worse than Dweezil Zappa ( say it outloud in an obnoxious voice and you'll know what i'm talking about).....

Although his sisters, Moon Unit and Diva Thin Muffin are not far behind.  I do enjoy some creativity when choosing baby names. It's nice to get away from the very common, generic names... but when you go so far as to name your child Sage Moonblood, Audio Science, Apple...  (all of which are celebrity baby names), it's just cruel to the kid.

Taught the Chinese were alone on this but from the looks of things is nothing now. How about John Okra, Cat Mandy and Doggy Buttom? Mind you Doggy Buttom is a friend of mine we use to be in same college anytime the teacher ask question doggy will just not shut up, but all the kids were afraid of Doggy so we laugh in secret not when he is there.

Can't stop laughing at myself in saying Dweezil Zappa outloud in an obnoxious voice. You rock Michelle, you've just made my day
