Christian Right: The True Totalitarians of America
In this election there is a lot of rhetoric about "traditional American values" and "saving the marriage." In all cases, the people making such claims are lying.
First of all, America was never meant to be a traditional country - indeed it was never meant to be a traditional anything. America was meant to be "the last best hope for humanity": A place where people, freed of the shackles of European Christian tradition, could go and build meaningfully free lives. To claim that there is such a thing as "traditional American values" therefore runs contrary to the intent and the purpose of America. America was founded on European Enlightenment philosophy of such people as Locke and Voltaire, and put into place by liberal humanistic intellectuals such as Jefferson and Franklin, with the French providing the funding. So to claim that there is such a thing as "traditional American values" and that they are identical with the beliefs of Paul Wyerich, Pat Robertson or Alex Jones is a Big Lie.
Secondly, it was never the "traditional values" or "family values" that were responsible for America's greatness. America's founder Thomas Jefferson had affairs and even had a child with a slave. As for America's greatness, that was achieved in the early 20th century - a time known as the Progressive Era, also known as the era of the flapper - a time in which technological innovation and economic accomplishment coexisted with union movement, sexual liberation, and a powerful liberal and feminist challenge to Victorian social norms. Contrary to the claims of social conservatives, 19th century was not the time of America's greatness. England was the great power of 19th century. America came to the forefront of the world during the Progressive Era - the era of the flapper - and remained there since.
Furthermore, if the one-man-one-woman-till-death-do-part were the definition of marriage binding for everyone, then most religious figures responsible for Christianity were terrible sinners. Men of God, David and Solomon, both had many wives and concubines. Abraham had a concubine in addition to a wife. Mormons and Muslims - many of whom take their religion a lot more seriously than do most Christians - practice polygamy. And while nobody is attacking anyone else's right to have a "traditional" marriage, to force such a thing upon a free country is to force on everyone totalitarianism - a totalitarianism that is not even Biblical and that has no right to exist in a free country. And I say this as a married straight man and a father who takes his family very seriously, but cares enough about freedom to protect meaningful liberty for those who have not made the same choices as have I.
Finally, there are many who claim that nuclear family is the only wholesome way to raise children. I ask this: Then why is it that the most successful man in America - President Barack Obama - was raised by a single mom? Why is it that the flapper generation and boomer generation - both raised in authoritarian nuclear families of, respectively, the Victorian generation and the World War II generation - grew up to be rebels? Why is it that Israeli kibbutzes and Australian aborigine tribes produce people who have had more wholesome lives than ones lived by many people raised in nuclear families? There are no credible attacks on the right of people to have nuclear families if they willingly choose to. There is every reason to stand up for people's right not to have nuclear families if such is their choice.
To the Christian Right, I say this. To make other people live the way you live, is totalitarianism. To make other people practice the religion that you practice, is totalitarianism. And neither has any place in a country that is intended to be free.
The Christian Right have abused the freedom of religion clause that was given to them by American Constitution to deny others not only freedom of religion - meaning first and foremost freedom not to be Christian Right - but also every other right and liberty. In this they are similar to the Nazis, who subverted the democratic institutions of Weimar Republic to institute totalitarianism - doing it in just the same way as the Christian Right keep attempting to do: By appealing to "traditional values" and national greatness and unleashing a storm against liberals, feminists, unions, and minority religions. And if you think that these people are American patriots, as they claim to be, think again. What American patriot would agree with Al Quaeda, as did Pat Robertson, and claim that 9-11 attacks were God's punishment for America? What American patriot would claim, as did Paul Wyerich, that America is a pagan country? In fact, these people hate America; and to know this one needs go no further than this very forum at
http://my.nowpublic.com/world/my-interview-religious-right-founders-son-frank-schaeffer
The Christian Right is in fact an industry of conmanship and deception. Not only do they make transparently false claims such as that AIDS is God's way of controlling the homosexual population or that 9-11 happened because God removed his protective umbrella over America - they do that. Not only do they do extreme damage by convincing people that scientists are fools and sinners and they, benefiting as they do daily from science, in claiming such things, aren't - they do that. But they practice a Big Lie of claiming this: That they are America and that the rest of America is not America. And that, should be an alarm bell for everyone to recognize that they intend nothing less than a total takeover of America and an imposition on everyone of a real dictatorship against their will.
It is time that lies be seen for what they are; and at this juncture this means especially the claims of social conservatives. And when these people start claiming that they are protecting American freedom or American values, to show just how far they are from the truth. These people's true name is tyranny, and they are seeking to impose totalitarianism on America. The true danger to America is not "socialism" and it is not "leftism"; it is the Christian Right. And true American freedom and true American values demand standing up to these people and preserving meaningful liberty in America as much as it does working for a future better and brighter than Armageddon in our lifetime or an America run by the people who hope for such a thing.

well, the world is a long way from thomas jefferson. yes, from a russian born us. citizen living in Australia, things seem a little different. I live in Slovakia, I would like to work or have a long stay in U,.S. in future. I know some americans and lived in your counntry, of which you are a citizen. I thing that protestant and religious tradition is a strong basic stone of american society. pioneers, rough people, cowboys were winning the West hand in hand with preachers and religious people- sometimes the religious crowd was too zealous, but there was a basic rationality in their deeds. Russia for ex. or Slovakia and other lands never experienced this process. maybe I am wrong, but this going west and the religion is what made America powerful.

Matt, there are many things that made America powerful. America became the world's most powerful country in early 20th century, which was a time of scientific and technological progress and economic achievement, and also the time of unions, women's rights, sexual liberation, and strong challenge to Victorian social norms. American economy grew hugely under Clinton, who was a very secular president, whereas it collapsed under the very religious Bush government with a very religious Republican Congress. Most of what American business sells comes from science, which is a secular government-funded vastly Democratic endeavor; and it was the very secular, Democrat-initiated, Democrat-run computer industry that was the engine of 1980s and 1990s prosperity. So in effect it is the more secular people that are mostly responsible for America's accomplishments.

The Christian right, the Jewish right, the Muslim right, and all the other people who believe they are right including the political left.

yes, I think Clinton did a lot to enhance and widen American soft power in the world. That is why I persdonally did support as a citizen of central European country military action against former Yougoslavia. nevertheless I meant the roots of American civilization- pioneer spirit. I have a difference of opinion, whether Bush was very religious, but yes, some right wing religious circles supported his policies. In some cases you are right- american scientific circles and film creators do support Democrats whole heartedly.

Even though I'm in another country, these people are scary. They are no better than the Taliban trying to impose their truths on everyone. Just because I have a belief and hold it as true and good and right, does not mean I AM right. It means I've found my answer. I still have to remember I could be wrong, even if a bunch of people agree, and humans have to experiment to find the right path. Folks with faith all think their right, but there is a lot of disagreement all the same. What I believe and what the guy next door believes may be radically different even while we both hold those truths to be self evident!

I cannot sit here and watch you dogs postulate this subterfuge. First off, most of the founding fathers were God fearing, Bible reading people and to deny such a thing is to overlook an important piece of OUR history. George Washington and Samuel Adams are just to name a couple that also happen to have been the president of the United States of America, which means the majority of the people sided with them. Samuel Adams even said that it is impossible for any God fearing, Bible reading people to succumb to slavery for the Bible is the basic foundation for human freedom. Sure Samuel Adams doesnt exactly have a spot clean record, but hey we are all human and every single person on the face of this planet makes mistakes, not one besides Jesus Christ has ever been a perfect man. Now most religions have stemmed from the Bible, but if something stems from the truth, then what has stemmed will be taken to be the truth no matter what has been added to it therefor causing people to be double minded and believe 2 concepts to be true even though there can only be one truth. Now I seek the truth just like anyone else so I must point out another fallacy in your statement. You said that our forefathers came to America to escape the European Christian control, but what you FAIL to mention is that they were being oppressed by CATHOLIC control and last time I checked, true Christians despise the Catholics because the Catholics have distorted the Bible so that they can take control. The idea of the Pope goes against the Bible itself, and yet people love this idea. The Catholic priests force the congregation to call them father, but yet Mathew 23 states that no man should be called father, except the Father (God). (and that doesnt mean you cant call your dad father because he is your father, but they refer to the place of authority that calls themselves father. Just as men are not to be called Rabbi, but the Jewish religion, which most people believe are the chosen people do this exact thing. So you can see why Bible reading people will shun those beliefs that are not the truth just as society has shunned religion because people love to believe a lie, especially the ones they tell themselves. I was one of them. Its so difficult to see when you are trapped in the mental slavery because if you knew you were being enslaved, you wouldnt be enslaved anymore, therefore creating a paradox of some sort.
Now I do wish to go off onto a tangent because I know that most people reading this are more than likely believers of evolution. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but evolutionists believe that first is was single-celled organisms that evolved into more complex. So their order of events are: creatures that lived in the water (where first life appeared), birds, then land animals, then man. Well congratulations, you believe exactly how Biblical people believe for in Genisis 1, God said "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the great expanse of the sky" on the 5th day, then on the 6th day he created the creatures that walked on land and the livestock and man. Now we do not know what 1 day to God is to man. It could be a month or it could even be 1 million years, we simply do not know, but what we do know is that the order of events for creationers is: creatures of the water (the Bible never specifically mentions fish but yet that is how we are taught, creatures can be bacteria, crustaceans, fish, sharks, anything that lives in the water which we know is where life was first), birds of the air, and then creatures of the land, and finally man. Now I believe that once we were put here, we then evolved from that point on, meaning that God could have created those single celled organisms first and those then evolved into the fish and mammals of the sea. But yet both sides are hounded for their beliefs even though the share so much in common. People hate to bring science into religion, I love it. I love science, I love history. Gen 1:1 states all 5 manifestations of the unknowable to man. "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth" In the beginning - time, God - energy, created - force, heavens - space, earth - matter. The Bible also states the earth is round. It also took The Bible for archaeologists to discover the lost city of Jericho. Did I mention that the Bible also stated that the number of stars is innumerable? But yet until technology allowed us to peer deep into space, man had thought to have counted all the stars in the sky, but we are just now learning in the past 30 years that there are too many stars to count and The Bible knew this 2000 years prior!? You cannot argue the vast amount of logic in The Bible, but just because a couple of your personal beliefs differ from The Bible, you disregard as relevant even though it is the only book to have withstood the testament of time and the only piece of recorded history that has over 2000 ancient documents that agree with The Bible and not all are in the same language mind you. It wasn't The Bible that created this chaotic world we are in, but it is the people who misuse its intent, for the Law of God is good if used lawfully and righteously. Hitler is a prime example. He used the concepts that were meant for the good of mankind to push his own personal agenda. Is it not better to fear the Master that is the Lord of us all who is not of this earth than to fear something that IS of this earth such as a man or the law that man creates? (Our own government is something most people fear. people fear doing wrong in the sight of politicians and the government) And if man is flawed, then is his judgement not flawed, is his laws that he feels are just not flawed? Then what do we hold to be the truth if everything we think is flawed? We cannot hold ourselves to standards of our own for if we did, then we are the only right person and everyone else is wrong and that would assert us in a place of authority over everyone else which means that there will be rebellion and chaos such as we have today, so is it not better to hold ourselves to a standard that is not our own or anyone else's but the Lord God Almighty?

>I cannot sit here and watch you dogs postulate this subterfuge. That would be you. There's that patented Christian Love[tm]. Christians talk a lot about how they're about love while showing they exact opposite-just like you do here. Imagine that {faux surprise}. >First off, most of the founding fathers were God fearing, Bible >reading people and to deny such a thing is to overlook an important >piece of OUR history. Gee, good thing then the article you're responding to made no such claim. How about actually [gasp] responding to what the gentleman wrote? What a radical, courageous, and honest concept! Secondly, what you wrote above is irrelevant and immaterial. >George Washington and Samuel Adams are just to name a couple >that also happen to have been the president of the United States of >America, which means the majority of the people sided with them. >Samuel Adams even said that it is impossible for any God fearing, >Bible reading people to succumb to slavery for the Bible is the basic >foundation for human freedom. Free clue: The Bible is slavery. Once again I note you haven't addressed anything in the article.>Sure Samuel Adams doesnt exactly have a spot clean record, but >hey we are all human and every single person on the face of this >planet makes mistakes, not one besides Jesus Christ has ever been a >perfect man. Only because the fictional character has indicated his mistakes don't count. Are you ever going to address anything in the article you're supposed to be responding to?>Now most religions have stemmed from the Bible, but if something >stems from the truth, then what has stemmed will be taken to be the >truth no matter what has been added to it therefor causing people >to be double minded and believe 2 concepts to be true even though >there can only be one truth. Now I seek the truth just like anyone >else so I must point out another fallacy in your statement. Wow! That's one hefty mind-bending word salad! You've must have done several tabs of Jesus at one time. You wouldn't know truth if it jumped up and ripped your sphincter muscle out, oh terminal fallacy writer, and cowardly Christian [yes, I repeated myself].>You said that our forefathers came to America to escape the >European Christian control, but what you FAIL to mention is that >they were being oppressed by CATHOLIC control and last time I >checked, true Christians despise the Catholics because the >Catholics have distorted the Bible so that they can take control.European Christian control also includes Protestant control, and the various Orthodox's control and other sects and sub-sects. That means all of them. Christianity=totalitarianism. Christianity is totally opposed to the concept of freedom. And, yes, clergy and individual theists distort the Bible so they can take control. Again, such is opposition to the concept of freedom. Freedom requires bravery and courage. Such is why Christians oppose Freedom tooth and nail. Thus far you've not made any attempt to respond to what the article author wrote. Even worse, what you've written has been vapid dreck and word salad. There's no point in reading your writings further.Sadly, I'm all too familiar with the writings of your kind. It isn't pretty and it doesn't put Christians in any better light than the Taliban. Same stone-age mindset, lack of education, and irrationality. Best kept far away from children and sharp objects as well as things which can explode.

". You said that our forefathers came to America to escape the European Christian control, but what you FAIL to mention is that they were being oppressed by CATHOLIC control and last time I checked, true Christians despise the Catholics because the Catholics have distorted the Bible so that they can take control."
Which is exactly what the Christian Right has done in America.

". Not true. England was Anglican, not Catholic. Germany, which provided the bulk of immigrants to America, was Lutheran.
"Its so difficult to see when you are trapped in the mental slavery because if you knew you were being enslaved, you wouldnt be enslaved anymore, therefore creating a paradox of some sort."
The biggest mental snares being made these days by the Christian Right as they continue to lie to people about everything and make them believe that scientists, to whom America owes most of what it has, are fools and sinners, and people claiming such things are not.
" So their order of events are: creatures that lived in the water (where first life appeared), birds, then land animals, then man. Now we do not know what 1 day to God is to man."
Then explain why there are new bacteria out there that eat nylon, a material that did not exist until 1938.
"Did I mention that the Bible also stated that the number of stars is innumerable? But yet until technology allowed us to peer deep into space, man had thought to have counted all the stars in the sky, but we are just now learning in the past 30 years that there are too many stars to count and The Bible knew this 2000 years prior!?"
It also said that the earth is a circle rather than a sphere and that there was a mountain that looked over all the kingdoms of the world.
What you might find of interest is that Hindu religion has a tradition of swamis who have done exactly what Jesus has done and died and resurrected; that many of Jesus's teachings were identical with those of Buddha, who lived 600 years prior; and that there is a record of a man named Issa coming to India from the West around the time of Jesus in order to study their teachings.
Further, that ancient world was full of miracle-doers, and that before there was Christianity there was a myth of Mythra who died, resurrected after three days, and was going to come back to judge the living and the dead.
The Christian Right line on all such things is that they come from Satan. Which means that to believe that line is to damn everyone and everything other than oneself. And that is indeed a totalitarian stance to take.

Part of the Native American Indian removal Acts in the 1800 and 1900's included kidnapping little children to be removed from their tribes and forced to go to missionary Christian schools where too many were molested and beaten for even singing traditional spiritual songs in their own language. Today Native people still struggle to have freedom of religious. As far as Thomas Jefferson and other slave owners "having a child" with a slave, I would hardly call the forced rapes of young African girls by the founding fathers as an acts of anything but cruelty. Historically Christianity has always been synonymous with the ability to own land. This gave the Christian right the excuse to take land away fromnon Christian 'pagans or heathens". This excuse has helped cause the extermination of millions of Native people and the theft of the lands in the U.S. and so today we have what is left of our Native American population struggling to survive on reservations and in the cities. Thank you for this good article I hope people continue to learn and undo the damage that has been caused in the name of Christianity. A good place to start is to allow freedom of religion.
at 01:04 on July 9th, 2010
Yes, what was done to the natives was very wrong. Ward Churchill had some things to say on this matter, reading his work changed my outlook a lot.

I love your article! I live in Texas, so I certainly enjoyed posting this on FB page today. Thank you! It spares me having to argue with them. I'll just refer them to your article! I feel like we've returned to the days of the Salem Witch Trials, cross burnings and public lynchings. These people create hell on earth...certainly not heaven! They have destroyed our state, our country...even as they loudly and stupidly proclaim that Obama is the one who is destroying everything. I've said the motto for Rick Perry has to be: "Keep Texas stupid, so I can keep my job." The 2010 Texas GOP Platform is frightening! What is more frightening is that when I posted it, no one negatively reacted to it. One of the proposals: "we support lifting the restrictions on corporal punishment for foster children." These are the people who say Obama is the antichrist and Hitler, when Obama is the one who has given rights to children and to gay people to be treated as human beings. Keep up the great work!

Thank you.

' The 2010 Texas GOP Platform is frightening! What is more frightening is that when I posted it, no one negatively reacted to it. One of the proposals: "we support lifting the restrictions on corporal punishment for foster children." '
By corporal punishment they don't mean spanking. They mean severe violence. I know someone from Texas who was crucified as a child by a family member because he said that he did not believe in God. That's what the Christian Right has to offer America.
