In an article entitled, McCain's Wife Sets Combat Vets Back 30 Years with PTSD RemarkVetvoice.com includes highlights from Cindy McCain's interview with MarieClaire.com:

Q: You met your husband after his POW days. To what extent is that still with you - or is it a part of history?

CINDY McCAIN: My husband will be the first one to tell you that that's in the past. Certainly it's a part of who he is, but he doesn't dwell on it. It's not part of a daily experience that we experience or anything like that. But it has shaped him. It has made him the leader that he is.

Q: But no cold sweats in the middle of the night?

CINDY McCAIN: Oh, no, no, no, no, no. My husband, he'd be the first one to tell you that he was trained to do what he was doing. The guys who had the trouble were the 18-year-olds who were drafted. He was trained, he went to the Naval Academy, he was a trained United States naval officer, and so he knew what he was doing.

The article further states:

In two sentences, Cindy McCain manages to insult not only every combat veteran in history who didn't attend the Naval Academy, but also the thousands of veterans who quietly live their lives, tolerating PTSD each and every day.  I really should expand on this as the centerpiece of my post, but it makes my head hurt to really think about the implications of the comment.  So I'll leave it to readers to fill that idea out.

I guess all those PTSD folks just don't have the "right stuff" in the McCain view.

Karen Hatter, wow, you would have thought that one day Cindy and John would have sat down together and at least composed a reponse to questions of this nature, as it can't be the first time she would have been asked about it.

I can see what she's trying to say, but she says it the wrong way and with very little tact.

Karen Hatter, I like this story.

Thanks Karen

Very informative.

Especially in these times

The truth is not far away.. just dressed up in ridiculous costumes

that will forever keep changing until some people decide to do more soul searching.

Peace,

Karen Hatter, I like this story. It's good stuff.

See, I told you she's a cold, heartless witch with a capital B.

She's all about the money and glory of being "first ho". She can't be first lady since she isn't a "lady".

Cindy is not all about the money. She has all the money she needs and she has helped a lot of children, etc, etc. You have a lot of nerve calling her a witch with a B. Nobody is perfect but I'd bet she is closer to perfect than you will ever be. Shame on you.

I saw Cindy Oct 5th 2008. I had a nice time. You can feel the love she has for her husband.

I don't believe her comment that McCain "doesn't dwell on [it]", as it's been a lynchpin of his campaign.

The officers suffer from PTSD more then the enlisted so I am not sure where Mrs Mccain received her information.

Karen Hatter, I like this story. I think your find that even the lowest of rank actual are trained what to do if captured. Number, Rank and name, say nothing else.

But of course officers must know what wine is on offer,  lets be serious Cindy McCain knows as much about these things as most army wifes do and is proud her husband served honerably as a US officer. Her husband as probaly said I was okay when I was a prisoner of war, I recieved good training. She had no idea that grunts also have such training.

I am relating to the British Army and as a grunt I was taught about being captured and what to do. Later I did more intense training where I was treated like a prisoner of war on my first NCO's course. I am sure the US forces receive similar training as the British do.

I agree with Cindy that the 18 year olds would have only been given some training on what to do when capture, the norm as above Name, Rank and number and nothing else. But the whole thing is just the same if captured for officers or grunts and the treatment of interigation, hooded head etc is just as terrifying especially not knowing if your live or die. No training in the world will change that and you certainly do not know what your really do under such stress.

The husband should have been asked such questions and not the wife she was not there and certainly may not know how her husband really feels about his time as a POW only he can relate the truth about that.
