Residents of the La Casita Apartments already felt neglected by managers who let buildings run down, even before Hurricane Ike broke windows and tore patches off roofs. But instead of starting on repairs to make the apartments livable after the storm, management skipped town, keeping the rent money and leaving the bills unpaid.

It took quick work by city officials and a mortgage company on Thursday to arrange for a management takeover that would stave off impending evictions for more than 1,000 residents.
This story is newsworthy because the city of Houston, esp Mayor Bill White took quick action and prevented an entire apt. complex (1,000 residents) from being evicted.
