Clean world, wave energy from coast to coast, first european electricity ...

The renewable energy sector has received a boost with the inauguration of the world's first commercial wave power project off the Portuguese coast. 30 - 100 MW extension Wave park in planning.

Explainer:

Waves move magnets in a coil, forward and backward,  generating electricity, like the moving torch with the magnet indside. The unregular electricty is streamlined by electronic controllers. A cable connects the wave generator to the coast, delivering Electricity for the homes.

Developed by a Scottish engineering company, Pelamis Wave Power Limited, the Pelamis Wave Energy Converters (PWEC) have been towed into position three miles off the coast of Agucadoura in north Portugal.

The first phase of the project is using three PWEC to generate 2.25 megawatts of power at a cost of nine million euros.

If successful, a second phase will see energy generation rise to 21 megawatts from a further 25 machines providing electricity for 15,000 Portuguese homes.

The project is a joint venture between Pelamis Wave Power Limited, Babcock and Brown Ltd -- a global specialist asset manager, Energias de Portugal (EDP) and Portuguese energy group EFACEC.

Named after the sea snake Pelamis, each machine measures 140 meters in length, is 3.5 meters wide and sits partially submerged in the sea.

To understand the engineering problem, you have to appreciate how the wave machines work. Pelamis is an ancient word for sea snake. And it is true that the machines look like giant metal snakes floating in the water.

Each one has four long sections with three "power modules" hinged between them. There are large hydraulic rams sticking into the modules. As the long sections twist and turn in the waves they pull the rams in and out of the modules like pistons.

SOLARLIFE, I like this story. It's good stuff.

It is grand time for this to take off!

Paschen thanks for Flag "Wave energy", in many shops you can buy a transparent torch with a moving magnet inside producing with the coil the electricity for the light. This is the principle here, no complicated to servic turbines.

Here on the West Coast of Canada we have a group of progressive brilliant entrepreneurs and engineers starting a tidal power venture.  They are looking for another round of investment as we speak so anyone who knows someone who cares to invest in what will obviously be an industry with explosive growth go to the Blue Energy website and get in touch with these incredible people!

Moonwolf, Canada with sea Hydro turbines Blue energy, good idea. The scottish wave energy device has no turbine, but inside moving magnets, so the electricity maker is somehow swinging with the waves. No critical fixation or orientation necessary.
