Clemency denied: Beltway sniper set for execution
Virginia Governor Tim Kaine has denied the request for clemency issued criminal, John Allen Muhammad.
He is scheduled to die by lethal injection for the sniper attacks which terrified the Beltway community comprised of Washington, DC, Virginia, and Maryland in 2002. Muhammad's attorney, Jonathon Sheldon, believes it is a moral mistake to execute his client, because the man is "severely" mentally ill.
Tuesday night at a Virginia prison for killing Dean Harold Meyers at a gas station during a three-week spree that left 10 people dead in 2002 across Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.
Muhammad and his teenage accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, were also suspected of fatal shootings in other states including Louisiana, Alabama and Arizona. Malvo is serving a life sentence.
Muhammad's attorney, Jonathan Sheldon, says Virginia will be executing a severely mentally ill man. Muhammad has exhausted all of his court appeals.

It has been reported also that he will be allowed a contact visit with family. A contact visit is one where there is no glass or doors between them.

I heard his attorney interviewed this morning. Apparently he has 3 brain lesions and part of his brain has been eaten away per the MRI. He is psychotic and delusional. Not defending him in any way, it an end of the matter...of sorts

I heard that this morning as well. In any case at least he gets to say goodbye to his family, his victims never had that opportunity.
We don't have a death penalty here, but we do have a couple of monsters, Clifford Olson and Robert Pickton that fall in the same category as Charlie Manson. Our laws permit them to request parole under the faint hope clause. So realistically, under the right conditions, these two could get paroled at some point.

I saw the snipers eyeball to eyeball, stuck in traffic. I did not know them as snipers as they had yet to take their first victim in the DC metro. They were slumped low in their car seats and I said to my wife, "Those guys look real mean and angry, don't they."

Sad that a man could do what he did, sad that it comes to this. In the end though, he made his choices.

Hugh: Are you actually saying that Muhammad John Allen was responsible for his own actions? JEEZ! That's a bit intolerant--don't you think?

Well, death is always solemn. And what, really, could he have said?
