More on the apparent "scamming the idiots" mess revealed in the e-mails of two of the "Global Warming" experts involved.

These are from the emails exposed by hackers on Thursday.

Dear Ray, Mike and Malcolm,
Once Tim’s got a diagram here we’ll send that either later today or
first thing tomorrow.
I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps
to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from
1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline. Mike’s series got the annual
land and marine values while the other two got April-Sept for NH land
N of 20N. The latter two are real for 1999, while the estimate for 1999
for NH combined is +0.44C wrt 61-90. The Global estimate for 1999 with
data through Oct is +0.35C cf. 0.57 for 1998.
Thanks for the comments, Ray.

Cheers
Phil

Hi all – I’m not too comfortable with this, and would rather not sign – at least not
without some real time to think it through and debate the issue. It is unprecedented and
political, and that worries me.

My vote would be that we don’t do this without a careful discussion first.

I think it would be more appropriate for the AGU or some other scientific org to do this -
e.g., in reaffirmation of the AGU statement (or whatever it’s called) on global climate
change.

Think about the next step – someone sends another letter to the Senators, then we respond,
then…

I’m not sure we want to go down this path. It would be much better for the AGU etc to do
it.

What are the precedents and outcomes of similar actions? I can imagine a special-interest
org or group doing this like all sorts of other political actions, but is it something for
scientists to do as individuals?

Just seems strange, and for that reason I’d advise against doing anything with out real
thought, and certainly a strong majority of co-authors in support.

Cheers, Peck

While first e-mail could be explained away, the second one certainly damns the first.

I haven't yet found the remainder of the e-mails online. There  might be a few of them missing from the server they were stolen from as well.

Was there a conspiracy to defraud the public? Time will tell - perhaps.

In a comment found at a different website, the following was noted:

When I was in law school, one of my profs noted dryly that once in a while the Massachusetts Attorney General would sternly announce ‘we are going to investigate this matter of ____,’ and the sky of Boston would blacken with the smoke of burning documents.

I bet there was a blip in electricity use this morning from emails being deleted by the climate change community.”

There have been no claims by the East Anglia Climate Research Unit that these e-mails were faked. One of the authors has admitted that the e-mail was his - while waffling on the content.

The data released by the hackers - while stolen -would be available through the British version of the Freedom of Information Act.

My question(s).  If the data was faked, if global warming is a scam, do we get our money back?  Will governments give up on the power grab, and the treaties? Will "cap'n trade" go away?

isnt hacking illegal

1
Babel-Fish

Malicious hacking and things that are not really hacking but seeding virus's and worms etc is very illegal. Real hacker do not normally get in to trouble. Hacking over the years has seemingly got muddled up with other things and really got a bad name.

Something is going on out there. I watch my patio for changes. The mums and pansies are lasting longer than normal. The firewheel has yet to bloom and it is almost Thanksgiving! What gives?

I will have a flowering begonia for Christmas. Will the snowflakes fall again?

Hy Jim, that is most likely due to climate change, not global warming. We are supposed to have el Nino this winter

1
Hugh Askew

meantime, we had the coldest October on record here - and the entire country was below average for the month.

But Al Gore says Manbearpig is out there, find manbearpig and find the cause of Global Warming

This is the story of the decade and Nowpublic needs to get everyone on to it. We are talking about an epic scam that was intended to turn Al Gore into a billionaire (and make millionaires out of greenies).

If one actually takes the time to google Jonathan Overpeck. The guy who sent this "so called" damning e-mail. It is VERY OBVIOUS that you are taking a debate on scientific data and trying to translate it into the bullshit that is required to "prove" a media catch phrase. i.e. climate change, global "warming" .

There is no cat, no bag, only a bunch of science people who want to get all the facts down to the millimeter before the media and politicians put their life's work into the blender that is what we call news.

See for yourself, skim a few pages of Jonathan Overpeck's site.  for example Climate-induced Vegetation Change: Past and Future - http://www.geo.arizona.edu/dgesl/research/regional/climate-induced_vegetation_change/climate-induced_vegetation_change.htm

Bernard Manning was the man bear pig. In climate change, is the world getting warmer ?

When isn't there at least one 'conspiracy' to defraud the public?:)

Thanks for this, Hugh!

Not yet, but global cooling is coming..................

There is definitely more to this story than meets the eye.  Who were these hackers and what was there motivation?  Were they being funded by anyone?

LONDON (AP) — A leading climate change scientist says the leak of documents stolen from a British research institute may be aimed at undermining talks at next month's Copenhagen global climate summit.

Kevin Trenberth — of the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research, in Colorado — said in an interview Sunday that hackers cherry-picked from the stolen data and distributed selected documents to try to undermine scientific consensus on man-made climate change.

Britain's University of East Anglia said hackers last week stole data from its Climatic Research Unit, a leading global research center on climate change.

Skeptics claim correspondence shows collusion between scientists to overstate the case for global warming.

Trenberth says the hackers took data out of context.

O no! Not another conspiracy!

That isn't data in the article - they are e-mails. Since they were at a public institution, they are available for public inspection. Had you known what to ask for, you could have requested them.

Dr. Jones has confirmed that these e-mails are genuine.  Whether the work represented by these scientists is as genuine seems to be under serious question.

Does it really matter ? No one is disputing the possible illegality of the hack. But let us not take a path of avoidance away from the content of the information.

Trying to keep it in mind that all of the pollution on earth, is not doing the atmosphere or planet any good, as well as knowing how greedy and opportunistic some people are, I remain unmoved by these purported details. Please, if this topic is a basis for real concern by it's posters, I also would encourage checking up on those respectable government servants who have been raping our country at will, by serving themselves the greatest portion of funds, even before they become available to the intended (unless that is the way it works) programs. Mass hysteria and big deals overwhelm our country, War funds and spending are astronomical, Medical care issued funding decreased; New taxes in the form of penalties applied, to non conformists, and we are powerless to protest because we are called unpatriotic and Un-American.

Try this quote: Normal 0

Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.

--George W. Bush, unwittingly telling the truth (Washington, D.C., Aug. 5, 2004)

Certainly I missed my chance in life to achieve a stature of formal education which would have qualified me to delve into some of these issues, however I feel confident that, among those here, there are some who are.

Al Gore, although all I know about him is that -- (A)-- He ran for president -- (B)-- He is for clearing up the pollution, He has a good chance of making a difference. He has to make a living while striving to accomplish those goals. Considering that hacking is somewhat illegal, the source then is questionable at best. Now all information received is good for consideration. Take for instance when The US somehow came to posses some of Germany's brightest minds. The question then would have been, should we discard all unethical studies or learn from them? It seems like we all know that even if atrocities were committed by these scientists in order to obtain beneficial results we still used the information. If the emails are accurate, they may point to a conspiracy. A similar one came up in the white house recently, advice from a consultant over how to phrase the  H.C. changes. The instructions were to make the announcement sound like it would benefit the consumer and not the provider. Personally, climate change, global warming or cooling is not going to be our worst nightmare.

Babel-Fish

Clearly what is being said here is actually against old US policy concerning cleaning up its pollution acts.

Look these damn research guys on both sides of the damn fence have been doctoring data. An inventing modules mostly to make money for themselves.

But when it comes to Green and fresh I all for it, when it comes to looking after vulnerable species I want them to be protected. And fresh air and un-polluted water yes I want that most defiantly.

Climate does change but these research guys really uses guesstimates, overestimates, underestimates and sell them selves off as experts. For political reasons or money reasons they will endorse and invent. The reality is we are polluting and it needs to be stopped.
