Closet transformation from work to retirement
Many Americans are facing early retirement because they can’t find work. They have become a part of the older workforce and while they may have current knowledge and up to date skill sets, there is an incoming advance of newer workers who also need a place in the workforce. They will work for less and even though you may offer to do the same, there is a tendency to hire younger.
You may think that this is age discrimination, and you may be correct. It doesn’t really matter. In this economy and market you may not have sufficient clout to do much about it.
Globalization has an impact too. Equal pay for equal work comes into play as corporations can shop the world market to get things done. The effect is to drive down labor cost and to you that means working for less.
Sooner or later, some of us come to the decision to cash in our chips and to live a little. Retiring isn’t so bad.
That brings me to sharing a few things about which you may not be immediately aware. Let’s begin with your clothes closet.
Open it up and let’s see what’s in there.
See all of those suits lined up in prominent position. There might be six or eight suits there. How many can you wear at once? How often do you plan to jump into suit at this point?
See what I mean? You don’t need all of that. Pick a spring, summer, fall, and winter suit at most. They don’t need that prominent position. Select the one for the current seasons and move the rest to the back. Oh yes, the Goodwill will be pleased to take the leftovers. Just get rid of them.
See all of those white shirts? What a joke. You only need a couple. Pick the best and get rid of the rest.
Just keep moving through the closet. Too many dress slacks? Get rid of them. Move all of the casual clothes into the forefront and it will make you feel better.
Keep the sentimental sweaters and gifts that wife, daughter, or son gave to you even if you hardly ever wear them. They are your heirlooms. Keep your best quality stuff, and stuff the rest in a bag for the needy. You don’t need it.
See the shoes that you collected and kept polished all these years? Weed them out.
By the time you get finished with this process, you might get the idea to attack the rest of the household. Next thing you know you will look around and wonder, why do I need such a big place?
The answer is likely to be, you don’t. It is time to reduce you footprint and feel better for it.

“Can I be forced into early retirement?
Absolutely not. Employers may not force older workers to take early retirement, either; early retirement plans are only legal if the employee is offered a chance to stay on, keeping things as they are, or retiring early with under a plan that leaves the employee better off than before. In early retirement situations, the employee must also have a genuine choice to reject or take the offer, the early retirmeent offer must be in writing, the employee must have 21 days to decide, and seven additional days to revoke.”
