Ken Cockrel Jr. became Mayor of Detroit, Michigan, as of 12:01am, though he has already been taking steps to shape city government.

Ken Cockrel Jr. announced the appointment Thursday, less than 12 hours before he becomes mayor.
The 57-year-old Barren is Cockrel's second high-profile appointment in as many days. A former federal prosecutor, Saul Green, will be deputy mayor.
Meanwhile, former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will be allowed to leave the state as long as he give 48 hours' advance notice, and as long as he returns to the Detroit area by September 29th. Within a month of that date, he must begin his jail term for assault and obstruction of justice.
