Columbus Day, not as it was intended!

OK. I've only been around here for about a week and it appears through comments and private e mail that I've ruffled a few feathers. (No pun or slight towards the Indians intended.)

Now, speaking of Indians, here in America there seems to be a bit of a controversy. Is it Native American, or American Indian? Being part American/Native American Indian, I don't take offense to either term. I'm also part Italian, an a very good friend of my named Armando, says that I must be a member of the Wapaho Tribe. Don't get me wrong here. If you find any of this offensive, please, please stop reading the rest of this piece, and accept my sincerest apology.

Where the hell was I? Oh, right the Indians. I saw a few very funny cartoons about Columbus and the Indians, but all of them are protected by copyright, so I can't share them in print. There's one showing Columbus getting ready to greet the "natives", and the Indians are like: "India? Wrong country, wrong continent! I'm mean come on. I can see getting the country wrong, but a continent?"  There's another one showing the "Indians" telling Columbus:"Hold on there, how do we know you aren't terrorists, with weapons of mass destruction?" If the narrative doesn't do it for you, go to cartoonstock.com and see all the humorous cartoons on this topic.(I can't link directly to the site. I'm told this would invoke the Now Public spam rule.( More on that in a later opinion piece.)

Which brings me to Canadian Thanksgiving. You didn't actually think I was going to let  Canada and the inhabitants off the hook now, did you? Of course not. I've come to the recent conclusion that the reason you Canadian's celebrate your Thanksgiving on America's Columbus Day, is to give thanks that Columbus came to America. I hear you've got Indians up there too. Are they native or Canadian?

OK, I'm done for now. If anyone has the skills to add any pictures, videos or anything else that will enhance this story, please be my guest,

Happy Holidays, everyone.

Canadian Indians are called Aboriginals, First Nations or Canadians, it all depends who you are addressing.  As for me, it is Hey BuDDay! (ala South Park)

Good BC brew for me Kokanee.  Not bad for an Albertan.

nanute: I thought you were a Mick (my first name is Rory--that's Irish-- so don't get offended!).

BTW: Do you remember the words that we kids used to put to that Columbus song we sang back in grammar school? I can't post them here! HA!

Timely post, Nanute.  I'm part Irish, in a fairly Irish-American area (Phila., Pa).  Just want to also add, on this "American" of all holidays, I like the fact that you are as confused about Columbus Day as I am...and realizing that it may have something also to do with when Canadians celebrate their Thanksgiving Day?
