The communist party in Nepal, the Maoists, have ruled this country for years. In February of 1996, they started what would be a 10-year civil war between the Maoists rebels and the government. During these years, more than 12,000 died, hundreds of thousands were displaced, and tourists grew more and more reluctant to make Nepal their destination. It wasn't until November of 2006, when the war ended with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. The UN has been there ever since in an effort to monitor the situation.
