Susan Atkins: Chameleon

Sharon Tate's killer was denied compassionate release.

Her request for mercy after she didn't show any mercy during her participation in the brutal Manson Crimes was rejected.

Atkins, 60, played a central role in the 1969 slayings of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and others in a bloody two-night rampage in the Los Angeles area. She has served 37 years in prison, longer than any other female prisoner, officials said.

Now ill with brain cancer and with one leg amputated and the other paralyzed, Atkins has only months to live, doctors have said.

The petition for Atkins' release had ignited debate about when mercy is appropriate, particularly considering the grisly crimes for which she was convicted. With the rejection by the panel, the process is effectively over, making it highly likely that she will die in custody.

Those backing her release argued unsuccessfully that the cost of keeping Atkins in prison, which is estimated at $1.4 million for medical care and security just since March, should be a factor in favor of releasing her because it would save the state substantial amounts of money.

patgarcia, I'm glad it was rejected, and I don't care if that sounds harsh.

Thanks for the flag! It's not harsh I'm glad too, I believe in forgiveness but crimes to society have to be paid for.

patgarcia, I like this story. It's good stuff.  I think she should be transferred to a medical prison.  I am a conservative so don't get me wrong here.  Susan has spent most of the time in prison rehabilitating her self and others.  I am glad she has done something other then stay true to Charles Manson who used psychological cult like tactics that would make the moonies blush.  I hope her suffering is quick. May god have mercy on her soul.

Thank you for the flag politisite,

Do you have medical prisons in USA? That would be good option. God is full of love and mercy, she will be with him if she repents and accepts him.

Sorry, but I have no pity on her. She was sentenced to death and had it commuted to life. She had absolutely no pity on those she killed and licked their blood. Taking LSD is no excuse. Too bad California spent so much keeping her alive. And what was that about her being the female prisoner who spent the longest time in prison? What happened to the other women involved in these horrendous crimes?

Thanks for your comment René,
I personally have no pity on her either, crimes have to be paid for, that's why we have authorities and a  justice system, others have been sentenced to death for less, but I also know God can forgive her if she repents. It would be interesting to find out what happened to the rest of those women.

patgarcia, I like this story. It's good stuff. She didn't show compassion to her victims when they died in fear and suffering.

Good story and I have always like Chameleon.  Though I was not personally opposed to showing Susan Atkins and her family compassion during her dying days, I am glad the victims' realtives' wishes were granted.  If I'm not mistaken, Susan Atkins holds the record for the female having spent the most prison time in California, because she was already in custody under suspicion for the muder of Gary Hinman when arrest warrants were issued for Leslie Van Houten and Patricia Krenwinkle.  Of the three, Van Houten has spent the least amount of time, because she was released for a short period after having won her appeal for a new trial.

I hope she found the right God this time; not some little weasel  like  Charlie.  Her screwed up religious beliefs is what got her where she is today. Still I have to believe that each and everyone of them were capable of murder to start with; and I think Manson saw that potential in them and used it to his advantage. What a sorry bunch of fools they were and are. Evil is what they are. If they let one out they will all be coming to neighborhoods near you. They aren't ready for society and society will NEVER be ready for them.

She should have gotten the death penalty anyway.

She'd be dead by now

I missed this one, sorry. Well, I am against the death penalty yet not against hard labour and life in prison if so deserved and I am glad she has to remain there, even though dying.
