NP Rank:
Conditions at IDP centres are up to standard and impressive - US
Hilary Rajakarunanayake, Editor – Sri Lanka, Asian TribuneColombo, 29 May,2009;
The US Congress delegation led by Congressman Heath Shuler (Democrat – North Carolina) said they saw that the standards of the relief villages where the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North are accommodated are quite good and impressive, and of a much higher standard than described by some sections of the media. The delegation that arrived in Sri Lanka on May 26 had gone on a two day observation tour of the relief centres where civilians liberated from the LTTE are being accommodated.
They expressed their satisfaction after meeting with President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Thursday morning (28) at Temple Trees.
In their meeting with the President, the Congress delegates discussed the possibility of providing necessary assistance for the IDPs, and said the United States is committed to help Sri Lanka in such areas.
The story about IDPs is becoming more and more strange. The reports coming out have been changing daily. It is now a good time to really assess the situation.
Hurricane Katrina hit the New Orleans, USA in August 2005. The devastation was immense. In comparison to the refugee situation in Sri Lanka, the most technologically developed and resourceful country in the world, USA, is yet to see an end to the resettlement of those who were displaced during Katrina. Nobody questions USA about this lethargy.
Knowing what really is going on in these IDP refugee camps, it could be easily stated that the Sri Lanka Government is making very steady progress.
The progress is so good that the IDP refugee camps set up by the Sri Lanka Government are much better than what the Pakistanis, and the USA through them have given the Afghan refugees. Why people like Ban Ki-Moon would not like to visit these camps to assess the situation there remains a question.

Up to the standard? Did they visit a real camp?

In last two days, some camps become less "real" because two hardcore LTTEs whose mission was to reinforce "reality" were removed from them. The "reality" is going to hit more - crossing the fingers and waiting.

Jayashree!
I say put an end to this peep show.
We know who our friends are - they were there when it mattered to us.
US and the UK are like vultures hovering over sri lanka skies trying to feed off the bones of dead tamils.
If there are any humanitarian concerns try feeding the Tamils that are alive. The so called Tamil Diaspora keep crying for a hollow "motherland". They do not care about the 200,000 tamils rescued by the SLarmy forces. The task of the govt is to keep the Tamils alive.
Only the Tamils abroad and the media vultures attempt to dig the graves to feed off dead Tamil bodies.

Ha..!
Pride is all that matters. A glittering "dumeel eelam" build on the bones of thousands of Sri Lankans and spraypaint "dumeel" all over is the ultimate goal of KTTEs. Something reminiscent to what Pol-Pot did in Cambodia. The Kingdom on Gorillas on the foundation of human bones.
As for the UK making noises about the current mess , it would be nice for some of them to know that even after 60 years their policy of "divide et impera." is working like a well oiled German machine and an ultimate nightmare.
As for 'diasporans'....well..!

I dont think US is worried at all by the crisis in SL. They have bigger fish to fry. UK is making noises to secure Tamil Diaspora votes and keep the tamils from agitation. So I do not think any of that matters.
But do you know what the reality is? Can you educate people about it? May be SL government should do that. I m frustrated by not able to get any unbiased information in the media. It is either pro SL or anti SL. Hard to get the actual reality.

Good one Ravi.
The Brits were always bad losers. US is yet to win a war against terror. Upto now, 1,334,000 civilians have been killed in Iraq, since the war began. All killed by Sadam and his men I suppose.
The US Govt never kills and Guantanamo Bay is a myth. They never make mistakes. (Well, except for going to war against Vietnam. and getting their butts kicked, and maybe Iraq, and maybe Korea). :-)
The world is realizing that US is a big bully.
