NP Rank:
To the Confused Readers: Genocide in Sri Lanka - Reality or Myth?
I can certainly understand your confusion.
There is no independent media or monitors in Sri Lanka right now. So you will hear many stories.
If it had been before 1983 Black July, your choice might have been little easier.
However, many Tamils fled Sri Lanka after 1983 Black July State Sponsored Terrorism on Tamils. Since there are many Tamils live in abroad now, they also will tell their side that supports LTTE (to the most extent) as they have friends, and relatives living in Sri Lanka.
There are many accusations of LTTE on child soldiers, etc, etc. LTTE is an evolved militia group into a political facet. LTTE definitely has made it share of mistakes as any government or rebel group. However, they are in a situation to provide a solution to Tamils, which most Tamils are also willing to accept. Currently, LTTE is the only group that can be satisfactorily called as the representatives of Tamils. The Murder of Tamilchelvan remains as a strong evidence for the reluctance the Sri Lankan Government(s) to pursue peace talks.
Look at the current situation. There is confusion about what is going on. However, it is clear that the Tamils civilians are suffering to the extent of starvation, attacks, rape, torture and killing. Still, I don’t see any government or group acting fast enough to relieve the sufferings of Tamils. LTTE is the only army fighting for Tamils right now. When tsunami hit Sri Lanka in December 2004, LTTE lost no time setting up relief efforts to Tamils.
Sri Lankan government says that the LTTE will not let people to escape from the war zones. Where would the people escape to? To the concentration camps set up at the outskirts of the war zone? What happens in these “refugee camps” is way worse than death. So what is the real choice for these Tamils civilians?
In Sri Lankan Government captured Kilinocchi, the Sri Lankan Army has organized the government hospital into a torture and rape camp. Tamils civilians are forced to live in the area with everyday capture to torture/rape of young men and women.
When there is no free media, who is ever going to bring these stories out? And when the stories do come out it will be too little, too late.
I don’t support LTTE blindly; I don’t want the only existing group that can provide a solution to Tamils to be wiped out.
If LTTE would be wiped out, the last 60 years of sufferings will start from scratch again for Tamils in Sri Lanka. There would be a new Tamil militia sooner / later as the history does not reflect any other possible development.
Sri Lankan Government(s) have been known to marginalization of Tamils in Sri Lanka. Cultural genocide of Tamils has started in 1948. The most destructive crime done against Tamils was the burning of Jaffna Library. Why would a government burn the South Asia's finest Library at the time? The library contained many 95,000 volumes irreplaceable manuscripts. Tamils lost a huge part of their culture and history.
There is a history of Tamils oppression in Sri Lanka.
Few urgent requests to the Sri Lankan Government:
(1) Stop the war on Tamils
(2) Allow independent media and monitors
(3) Allow aids to reach the affected Tamils
(4) Stop torture, rape and killings in the refugee camps and captured areas
(5) Stop forced disappearances of Tamil civilians in captured areas
I beg you in the name of dying / suffering Tamils in Sri Lanka: Please don’t be a bystander. Please voice your opinion. If you don't believe what you see in this article, dig for more information from free media.
This is another Darfur.
It is the intent to destroy a community that matters. There is a 60 years of history of Tamils suffering in Sri Lanka. It is genocide and it is carried out freely in Sri Lanka.

Tamiya knows what she's talking about. Most Tamils agree with her points entirely. You don't know what's going on in Vanni cos you're only getting the government's version of the news.
