Congressman Tim Mahoney, another West Palm Beach sex scandal

Democratic Congressman Tim Mahoney, who was elected to clean up the West Palm Beach office after a gay sex scandal involving his predecessor, Republican Mark Foley, has become the central figure in a sex scandal of his own.  Congressman Mahoney, who campaigned on the platform "Restoring America's Values Begins at Home," is now dealing with the public airing of his own dirty laundry, that bloggers have dubbed "Mahoneygate."

Tim Mahoney is alleged to have carried on an extramarital affair with Patricia Allen, a former volunteer staff member.  To avoid a lawsuit, and to avoid hurting his next campaign, Congressman Mahoney has agreed to a $121,000US initial settlement, with an additional $50,000 per year for the next two years.

The details of Allen's accusations are contradictory; a spokesperson for Congressman Tim Mahoney stated that the former staff member resigned on her own and was not fired.  This is contrary to reports from other sources, including the New York Daily News, that state Mahoney fired Allen after the affair had ended.

Mahoney, who is married, also promised the woman, Patricia Allen, a $50,000 a year job for two years at the agency that handles his campaign advertising, the staffers said.

A Mahoney spokesperson would not answer questions about the alleged affair or the settlement, but said Allen resigned of her own accord and "has not received any special payment from campaign funds."

Senior Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives, including Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL), the chair of the Democratic Caucus, have been working with Mahoney to keep the matter from hurting his re-election campaign, the Mahoney staffers said.

The news of this second sex scandal in the West Palm Beach district has caused outrage among some political bloggers.  Noel Sheppard of NewsBusters has been particularly vocal in his disgust of Congressman Mahoney's conduct.

It was revealed Monday that Democrat Congressman Tim Mahoney (D-Fl.), the man who replaced Mark Foley (R-Fl.) in 2007 after the latter resigned for having sent e-mail solicitations to male pages, has been caught in his own sex scandal with a former mistress who used to work for him.

Given the extraordinary irony involved in the man who campaigned on bringing back to his district "a world that is safer, more moral" now being caught in a seedy affair of his own, one has to wonder just how much attention the Obama-loving press will give to this matter three weeks before Election Day.

This seems especially important given the many weeks of constant media focus Foley's scandal was given prior to the 2006 elections, and just how much that assisted Democrats in winning back the Congress.

What a putz! Is something in the water down there?

Okay, whose turn is it now?  Could a Libertarian get it right, or would a Libertarian care?

Pelosi wants investigation of sex scandal involving Dem who replaced Mark Foley, the Republican who resigned due to his own sex scandal.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) called on the House Ethics Committee to "immediately and thoroughly" investigate a report by ABC News today that Florida Rep. Tim Mahoney secretly paid his former alleged mistress and campaign staffer to prevent a sexual harassment lawsuit from going forward.

After an ABC News report revealed that Florida Rep. Tim Mahoney secretly paid his former alleged mistress and campaign staffer to prevent a sexual harassment lawsuit from going forward, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) called on the House Ethics Committee to "immediately and thoroughly" investigate the report. The advertising company used by Mahoney's campaign, Fletcher Rowley Chao Riddle, also announced that it had "permanently" ended its relationship with the West Palm Beach congressmen based on the report by ABC News that he had promised his former alleged mistress a job at the firm as part of a secret legal deal. Collapse

"I just learned today about the serious allegations concerning Congressman Tim Mahoney," Pelosi said in a statement. "These charges must be immediately and thoroughly investigated by the House Ethics Committee."

The announcement came just as the advertising company used by Mahoney's campaign said that it had "permanently" ended its relationship with the West Palm Beach congressmen based on the report by ABC News that he had promised his former alleged mistress a job at the firm as part of a secret legal deal.
