This is a wonderful enjoyable and humorous list of differences. Please share your personal ones.

Subject: Conservative vs. Liberal

If a conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn`t buy one.
If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants your guns outlawed.   If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn`t eat meat.
If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.   If a conservative sees a foreign threat, he thinks about how to defeat his enemy.
A liberal wonders how to surrender gracefully and still look good.   If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life.
If a liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.   If a black man or Hispanic are conservative, they see themselves as independently successful.
Their liberal counterparts see themselves as victims in need of government protection.   If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.
A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.   If a conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels.
Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down.   If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.
A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced. (Unless it's a foreign religion, of course!)   If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may compete for a job that provides it.
A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.   If a conservative slips and falls in a store, he gets up, laughs and is embarrassed.
If a liberal slips and falls, he grabs his neck, moans like he's in labor and then sues
If a conservative reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh.
A liberal will delete it because he's "offended".

Tikun: your examples of liberal positions on the issues does not square with the definition of liberalism. From Merriam Websters on line dictionary:
Main Entry: lib·er·al·ism Pronunciation: \ˈli-b(ə-)rə-ˌli-zəm\Function: noun Date: 1819 1 : the quality or state of being liberal

2 a often capitalized : a movement in modern Protestantism emphasizing intellectual liberty and the spiritual and ethical content of Christianity b : a theory in economics emphasizing individual freedom from restraint and usually based on free competition, the self-regulating market, and the gold standard c : a political philosophy based on belief in progress, the essential goodness of the human race, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political and civil liberties; specifically : such a philosophy that considers governmentd capitalized : as a crucial instrument for amelioration of social inequities (as those involving race, gender, or class)

The examples would perhaps better fit the "left-wing" definition

left wing:

the more liberal or radical section of a political party, group, etc.

As in: Democratics are the left wing of American politics.

Perhaps this definition of 'liberal' (as opposed to liberalism) is an even better fit     liberal: excessively free or indecorous in behavior; licentious

I consider myself a liberal, and I do not see  myself as defined by your definition of "liberal." Here is a list of definitions of liberal from the on line dictionary. I don't see your definition on this list, though I'm sure it is out there somewhere.

You can try and define the "Democratics" (I think you mean Democrats), as the left wing of American politics. This would be akin to my saying that right wing reactionaries are the Republicans of American politics.

nanute, I am a registered Democrat, but hardly a registered liberal.   I think ticun's post fits MOST, but not all, of those that occupy the liberal wing of the democratic party - certainly those that hold sway for the moment.

Were this not so, there would be no discussion regarding the so-called Blue Dogs. Most of today's Blue Dogs would have fit nicely into the left wing of the democratic party in the 60's & 70's. It is a sad indication of the leftward tendency of the "liberals".

Mr. Askew

The Blue Dogs are the political descendants of a now defunct-in-name Southern Democratic group known as the Boll Weevils, who played a critical role in the early 1980s by supporting President Ronald Regans tax cut plan. The Boll Weevils, in turn, may be considered the descendants of the Dixiecrats and the "state's rights" Democrats of the 1940s through '60s.

The Dixiecrats were formed in 1948 against civil rights and comprised mostly the Southern States.  The movement to enfold tax cuts came later with the Reagan administration, so I don't see how you see them as fitting into the left wing in the 70s.  And in the 1960s, LBJ was from Texas and considered a Southener, although he was not conservative, and a strong supporter of civil rights.  Remember the Civil Rights Act of 1964?  I do not see the Blue Dogs as "fitting nicely into the left wing of the democratic party in the 60s and 70s."

"I do not see the Blue Dogs as "fitting nicely into the left wing of the democratic party in the 60s and 70s."

Oh? Which liberals of the 60's were to the left of today's Blue Dogs? Which ones? Which issues?

Government spending? Health care?  The homosexual agenda? How 'bout a Kennedy? Did JFK favor unrestricted access to abortion?  How many politicians openly favored it?  George McGovern? Certainly had the anti-war thing going on, but while in favor of legalized abortion, he argued against the federal government meddling in what he felt was states rights issue.  Muskie? Pro-life, but strong on the Environment.

Please, let me know just which Blue Dogs would be too conservative to be a 60's or 70's liberal, and why.

Please don't bother using your interpolations of what they "might of", or "could have" been. Show me actual public speeches, writings, or articles that support your claim.

Things a changed a large bunch since the 60's.  Both parties in that time, have made stupid mistakes. It is time we admitted that neither side is correct most of the time. It wouldn't hurt if liberals would allow themselves a small dosage of humor, every now and then. Might help clear up that sneering tone of superiority that us little people loathe.

Thank you nanute for giving a definitive definition of "liberal."

Mr. Askew chose to give a degrading one that apparently suited his singular purpose and tells us something about his character.

I don't want to get into personal character issues, but the definition was slightly askew.

Nice, nanute! I like word plays!

You are welcome. I can see that.

Three thumbs up, tikun!  I'd give more, but that's all i have.

You all have been wonderful in defining for us your understanding of this left-right perception of reality. All the more does it show how difficult it is to understand with our limited 5 senses the appreciation of each unique situation in the world. However, to use compassion, empathy and capitulation as a means to create dialogue with an opposite perception leaves everyone in a direct threat including the "Liberal/Left/Compassionate." What an irony presented for us. we want to believe that we can change our "enemies" by understanding their situation but from the reality that we live in  not theirs. This leads to false hope and disastrous consequences.

Until we wake up to the dangers that beset us all regardless how much we want to change these dangerous realities by capitulation we risk our total annihilation and produce monsters instead.More powerful and destructive then we can imagine.

Modern liberals are as Tikun describes them. Traditional liberals are hard to find and often get called "conservative" today.

The journalist who wrote Bias and Arrogance and A Slobbering Love Affair, books about the media and its prejudices, now he is a traditional liberal. But he is no longer a democrat.

The modern liberals have taken over the party and that is why an amateur, green and untested, such as Barack Hussein Obama ("mmm, mmm, mmm") got elected president.

nanute

Nonsense! Obama was elected by a majority of the voting public. The "modern liberals" as Tikun describes them are by definition illiberal. Traditional liberals that often get called conservative today are really neoliberals. You can try all you like to redefine true liberals and liberalism, I'm not buying  your  definition of terms.

2
Roy C

Many non-liberals and many non-modern liberals voted for Obama. They have already begun to defect and account for his historic popularity and approval crash.

The modern libs took over for the old school libs in the late sixties when things got radical.

Real liberals are few and far between nowadays, especially on college campuses and in newsrooms.

Oh really? His approval ratings are still above 50%. This in spite of the fact, that fringe elements on both sides of the spectrum, are not happy with his performance.

Good laugh.

too bad some here got in a huff.

To paraphrase Marx, "Some got here in a minute and a huff".

I've got a sense of humor. Where's the good laugh?

Or perhaps a Liberal will not comment on it either! HA!

Thanks Tik!
