Constitutional Lawyer: Bush Defied Law

Glenn Greenwald, a former constitutional lawyer in NYC, and current blogger at Salon.com,
appeared, recently, on Bill Moyers to discuss his new book "Great American Hypocrites."

Greenwald called the war in Iraq an "unparalled disaster," and is the author of another
book, Tragic Legacy. He says the war in Iraq was "launched based on false pretenses," and
"severely damaged...our credibility...

He called military involvement in Afgahnistan "worsening by the minute," and said
"It's very difficult to even envision a positive outcome sufficient to render the
initial decision to invade a smart thing to do independent of whether it was
justifiable."

Greenwald was practicing law, in 2001 when the planes hit the WTC, and initially felt
like 9/11 might have been able to "generate very positive things for this country," But
as time went on his ability to back the war was eroded "...And it was only once I saw how
radical of a war was being waged on the rule of law and our constitutional values
by this administration,
" that he advocated acitivism against it.

Greenwald believes Bush defied the Consitution and states:

"... not even the British king had the power since the Magna Carta, to order citizens imprisoned without charges based solely on the unchecked say so of the president. That is the power that this government assorted and seized and exercised. And that's when I realized that things had gone radically awry."

Parts 2 and 3 and his appearance on Fox are available on his blog

Most well read persons know that Bush violated Constitutional laws, but the law is to be tested...as democracy is being tested because of the ineptitude of those who oversaw the vultures of Wall Street.

So, as Benjamin Franklin once advised when there was a threat of revolution.... "let there be an uprising, " the people said...and Franklin told everyone in power to say, "okay."

And because all was peaceful, there was no uprising....nothing happened.

And all the doomsayers and prophets of doom, hear ye be wrong, and the mother earth shall survive....and shall take those into her breast who have honored her....

but, then I am an optimist....

Yeah anyone who is left wing, or has socialist leanings thinks Bush violated the  law.  You call them "well read".  I am assuming this forum which is primarily a left wing haven is the place where these "well read" people get their sources right?

And Mr. "Greenwald" is a conservative too right?! blahahahaha.

So a leftists attorney from "New York" says it so it must be true.  Right?

He's a constitutional lawyer he's not bending anything to suit his political views he's interpreting events through the dictates of the document.

I think he's a resonable and restrained thinker pointing out the facts of the matter.

It takes them eight years to figure that out?

-all being done to draw the spotlight away from the selling of a senate seat in Ill ( "But on Dec. 4, according to the feds, here’s what they heard: Blagojevich told an adviser he was giving “greater consideration” to one pick for the Senate seat, named “Senate Candidate 5″ by the feds, because of that politician’s willingness to raise money. That man has since been identified as U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., the Chicago Democrat affectionately known in his hometown as Triple J." ) and the great rip-off devised by a well-known democrat donor ( "Maybe Madoff thought if he made enough contributions to Democrats, he could get away with his scheme indefinitely. It worked for Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae — for awhile. The more our economy comes to be based on bailouts, the more standard this will be as the way to do business." ) as well as the inconsistencies of our "new", "transparent" cesspool-spawned leadership.

I agree with your general statement - things are done in public by the government in order to distract us from seeing or paying attention to other things. The problem is that in this world it isn't like there is one scumbag doing things and attempting to hide something - like there is a marketplace of products and of ideas there is also a marketplace of scumbagery.

Dirtbags conspire to hide behind other dirt bags and, as you say, promote another's sins just to hide their own. Think of modern government and its use of the media as "Dangerous Liasons" without the powdered wigs.

This is  not to say that Rob B., Boy Governor  or Triple J. should be let off the hook. for what they were allegedly indulging in. But it also means that Bush, Cheney and others must be put in full light too and charged if necessary.

-we can now look forward to many more baseless claims and innuendo's, all devised to keep these things under wraps.

-seems that "the news IS NOT public"as my posts are being accepted and then taken down.

Interesting article and film.  I don't buy the idea that so many learned people did not know the war was unnecessary.  Can most of our leadership have truly been that gullible about something so important?  Hopefully not, although it does not say much for them if they were not really misled, either.

Reporters Without Borders ranks U.S. something like 53rd out of 150 (all aprox) out of nations in terms of how free their press is. In Manufacturing Consent Noam Chomsky clearly illustrates the degree to which American media is censored and educates you that a handful of corporations now own the media. Which creates a foggy system of reporting by companies with financial interests.
