Controversial Photo Pulled from Obama Web Site
In a post on my blog 11 months ago, I described the photo this way:
On the surface, it seems innocent enough. The tired Democrat presidential candidate. Seated. Alone. Contemplating his future. Above him, the world champion boxer, Muhammad Ali, stands above another defeated opponent, exuding strength and confidence — the kind of strength-by-association stuff a political campaign manager wants the photo to convey to potential voters.
On the flip side, however, the photo is troubling in that it brings attention to a man who, in 1964, cited his Muslim faith as a reason to claim “conscientious objector” status and refuse to serve in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
If I’m reading this obviously-staged photo correctly, Obama wants to be associated with a four-times-married Muslim draft dodger who made millions by beating people up inside a boxing ring.
Perhaps, the Obama campaign realized that its waning support is due, in part, to the fact that many Americans — including those who’ve seen the photo in question — have grown suspicious about the people with whom the junior senator from Illinois associates and about his world view. Ali was, after all, a Muslim convert and draft dodger who refused to fight for his country.
I’m guessing that’s why the web site was scrubbed of the photo linking Obama to Ali. But that’s just my guess.

Funny how you got all of that out of this picture. I didn't get that at all.
I saw Barack Obama looking at his hands as he sat down underneath a picture of the Heavy Weight Champion, Ali, whom also had to overcome some barriers using his hands. Ali, was the heavy weight champion of the world. Obama, if elected, will be the leader of the world (kind of). Ali, was smart and and confronted racism straight on. So did Obama. Ali took a stand against an unjust war, so did Obama. Ali battled the media and anti-islamic prejudices and so is Obama even though he is not a Muslim.
What a beautiful composition made controversial by fear and prejudice. So sad.
Regards.

Good analysis Joselyn Lee, I totally agree with you.
Ali is a source of inspiration for many: he was confident, fought for his ideals no matter what people would think of him, he always stood up for what he believed in. And he refused to take part in an injust and terrible war that killed thousands of innocent people. Just like the Irak war.
Calling someone who privileged his moral values over "patriotism" a draft dodger is really stupid. Because patriotism often makes people do very stupid things: you fight when the cause your country is defending is right, not just to support your country. You defend your country when it is attacked, not when it attacks for bad reasons. Ali was a patriot because he thought his country was better than that.
And Ali paved the way for Obama, the only thing he can do is thanking him.

Joselyn Lee -- Ali confronted racism? He was a coward and a draft dodger!

Amy -- What was it, the exclamation point? How was my comment above not "respectful"?

I agree with Joselyn. That pic is subject to several interpretations and I think I know which one he had hoped most people would see but took the pic off the website than he got enough people telling him they saw it incorrectly, the way you see it incorrectly.

Ali was a fighter. Obama will fight for America. Sometimes the fight is long and tiring. THAT is the true meaning of the pic.
As for Ali dodging military service, everyone should if you feel strongly that you're being sent in to an unjust war. I'll fight for my country if the cause is proper and just.
Speaking of fighting in Vietnam, if memory serve me correctly, some lil pip squeak name George Bush was AOL for most of that conflict. Seems he joined the military but chose not to participate. Too bad too, we could have been saved the last 8 yrs of misery had someone splattered his guts all over the mei cong delta.
