One Year Anniversary of the Encana Bombings - Interview with Wiebo Ludwig

Wiebo Ludwig has been arrested by the RCMP and they are currently searching his Alberta farm.  He was previously convicted of setting explosives to protest the activities of oil drilling.

The arrest was made at the farm around about 8 a.m. Friday morning, said Insp. Tim Shields.

"It was a peaceful, low-profile arrest, as low key as possible," Shields said.

Roughly a dozen officers are searching the property, which lies about 25 kilometres east of the British Columbia border. They are expected to remain on the site for at least a few days.

There have been bombings of oil pipline pumping stations in recent months.  All facilities targetted are owned by the Calgary-based Encana.  A reward of $1 million has been offered for the arrest and conviction of the oil pipeline bomber

This weirdo actually put out a plea to the perpetrators last month to stop doing it.  Oh well what goes around comes around.  His neighbours will be happy.

Anyone ever read The Monkey Wrench Gang?

He does have some strong support in the population though. I remember a CBC documentary on him from a few years ago. Farmers and environmentalist did sympathise with his actions.

I remember seeing that documentary as well Paschen.  A very touchy subject this is, on one side I have had family that were working close to the sections of pipeline he was bombing but on the other, as a Canadian I am extremely aware of the environmental impacts these projects have and will have on our land.

It's important to keep in mind that most people have no control over oil and gas exploration on their land.  It's rare to own the mineral rights to ones land.  Sour gas flaring is poisonous.  When you think that a gas flare on your farm that you didn't want  in the first place is harming your kids, you might not be too peaceable.  He was convicted before on the word of an informant and he has already been released without charge.  Let's keep an open mind about this case.
