A suicide bomber blew himself up Monday night exploded at the entrance of the headquarters of the Special Branch Police (SB), an intelligence agency of the Islamabad Police, in Sitara Market (G-7 Markaz) of Pakistan's capital city, killing himself and a policeman. Two police officials were wounded and shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).
The intelligence agencies had reports of a group of four suicide bombers entering the twin cities. Two of them have struck, one at Peshawar Road in Rawalpindi on March 17 claiming 14 lives and the other in Sitara Market on Monday.
Over 120 personnel of the Special Branch were residing in the premises of the SB Headquarters and most of them were present in their barracks, an SB official told this correspondent.
Police constable Faisal Khan, deployed at the main gate of the headquarters, saved the lives of scores of his colleagues as he got hold of the suicide bomber when he was advancing towards the barracks. The bomber exploded the bomb killing both.
Constable Faisal Khan, 25, son of Rajab Khan resident of Wazir Bagh Road, Peshawar, had joined the Islamabad Police in 2005.
"The bomber wanted to hit the residential rooms of the SB personnel", and officer claimed adding that scores of causalities would have occurred had the bomber not been intercepted.
The security agencies have found the head of the bomber, which is recognisable. "The face is identifiable, the nose is disfigured but can be shaped by surgery."
The federal capital and Rawalpindi have been put on high alert following the blast.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Syed Kalb-e-Abbas, DIG (Operation) Bin Yamin, SSP (Traffic) Sultan Azam Tenuri, SSP (Operation) Tahir Alam, SSP (CID) Moeen Masood, SP (Headquarters) Mir Waiz Niaz and SP (Investigation) Sajid Kiani reached the scene soon after the incident. The officials of sensitive agencies as well as bomb disposal squads of army, police and the explosive experts SIG of FIA have collected body parts of the suicide bomber.
The blast was so severe that its sound was heard many kilometres from the scene and windowpanes of the police barracks were broken.
Eyewitnesses said that a suspicious young man in white clothes advanced towards the SB Headquarters at about 9 p.m. (PST). Constable Faisal Khan asked for his identity but he kept walking ignoring his warning and entered the main gate of the building. Faisal rushed to him and overpowered him upon which he blew himself up.
Abdul Karim, a computer operator of the SB, who was standing near the main gate, sustained critical injuries.
The IGP Islamabad said an investigation team has been set up to carry out probe. He announced a compensation of Rs300,000 for Fisal's family.
