CORPORATE AMERICA did not feel the consequences of the economic crisis that was caused in large part by its poor business practices. Company executives continued to receive large bonuses and enjoy elaborate vacations in the sun, made possible by bailouts funded by taxpayers. Meanwhile, many families across the country suffered through unemployment, loss of pensions, and home foreclosure. Numerous individuals lapsed into mental illness, resorted to suicide and/or violence against their families and others in their communities, or became involved in crime.
