Countries Pledge Over $5 billion in Aid to Pakistan
Over 40 countries attending a summit in Tokyo have agreed to give Pakistan more than $5 billion over the next two years, in hopes of stabilizing the country. The one-day summit was designed to help Pakistan build counter-terrorism measures and build up social safety nets and infrastructure.
The United States and Japan each pledged $1 billion, the EU promised $640 million and Saudi Arabia is giving $700 million.
The sum agreed by the 40 countries during a one-day summit in Tokyo on Friday is aimed at helping Asif Ali Zardari, the Pakistani president, to build counter-terrorism measures and bolster the country's economy and infrastructure.
