Rahul Dravid, the Rajasthan Royals captain, opted to bat first in their Pepsi Indian Premier League encounter against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Monday (April 22).
Chennai come in to the game on the back of consecutive victories away from home, first by 86 runs against Delhi Daredevils and then a four-wicket win against Kolkata Knight Riders, the defending champions. Rajasthan, meanwhile, are fresh from a seven-wicket loss against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday (April 20).
Of Chennai’s four victories so far, three have come away from home, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, their captain, believes it is because the wicket is unpredictable. “After fourth IPl, the wicket here was re-laid here and ever since then, we’ve struggled here. The wicket changes a lot, and we’ve been not able to play freely.”
Rajasthan have been at the other end of the spectrum, struggling away from home, and after choosing to bat, Dravid said it was important to put pressure on Chennai early. “It (the pitch) does slow up a bit,” he said. “It looks a lot better than some I’ve seen in Chennai in the past. With the heat and humidity, we’ll look to get the batting away and put pressure on them.”
Both teams made changes to their sides. Rajasthan dispensed with Shaun Tait and S Sreesanth, bringing in Kevon Cooper and Rahul Shukla, while Chennai handed a debut to Jason Holder, the West Indies medium-pacer, in place of the injured Albie Morkel.
