Blame it on us in the US for pushing aside the fairycake, the traditional British staple at birthday parties in favor of the new darling, well not so new here in America, the cupcake.

Or so says Zoe Williams in The rise of the cupcake (Guardian, January 8, 2009).

She notes that "when Pearl Lowe got married a few weeks ago, it was with cupcakes and canapes. Kate Moss was there. So there's a possibility, albeit a slim one, that Moss has eaten one."

It all goes back she writes to the 1996 opening of the famous Magnolia Bakery on Bleecker Street (New York)...

Hey, you have to admit Cupcake sounds cooler than Fairycake :)~

BTW those Magnolia Bakery cupcakes are very good!

I made this for my daughters 14th birthday. Was the 1st cupcake tower I had made.

Now that you mention it, there have been quite a few cupcake joints popping up here and there. My favorite was Kick *SS Cupcakes in Boston.

I don't think that the links in this story constitute SPAM. The cupcake craze started with Sex and the City and Magnolia Bakery. The Zoe Williams link goes to a newspaper article. The only fault I see in the article is that it seems unfinished.

Maybe I am just feeling that it's inappropriate and/or unprofessional for me to read your accusations of SPAM here while I am trying to enjoy this article. And your suggestions on improvement are patronizing. If I was leconcierge I would be looking for a different medium to participate in.
