30 aggressive gatecrashers storm a home party and the angry owner drives them off with a whip. Guess who faces charges of using excessive force? The home owner, of course.
This is exactly what happened to Sydney resident Dion Driman, whose son was having a home party last Saturday when the property was invaded by a gang of more than 30 gatecrashers, who kicked in the front door while a second group came round side of the house. After an altercation with the ringleader, Mr Driman successfully drove them off using a 1.5 metre sjambok, a South African whip that resembles a thick riding crop. No arrests were made as none of the gatecrashers could be identified, although Mr Driman claims the group has been harassing local residents for months: "People have had enough. This gang has been terrorising people whose kids are having parties for months now. Somebody needed to stand up to them."
As yet another example of how the justice system treats crime victims, incredibly police are deliberating on whether Mr Driman's use of the whip involved "excessive force" - despite the odds of 30 men against him and the property damage involved. Perhaps they should be seriously stop and think about whether there's something excessive about a home invasion.
Mr Driman, however, is unrepentant: "I would gladly do it again. They picked on the wrong guy."
