Dallas Wiens Got a Full Face Transplant At a Boston Hospital
Dallas Wiens underwent a miraculous full face transplant last week. Wiens underwent the face transplant procedure at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital.
The procedure took about 15 hours and included a team of more than 30 doctors, nurses and other medical staff. Staff have reported that Wiens is doing well after undergoing the surgery.
Dallas Wiens suffered severe burns to his face after touching a high-voltage wire back in 2008. He was helping some family members paint a church and hit a power line.
Wiens has had more than 20 surgeries since his injury. During some of those operations, doctors took skin and muscle from Wiens' back and thighs and transferred it to his skull.
The face transplant procedure gave Wiens an entirely new face: nose, lips, skin, muscles and nerves. His sight, however, could not be restored.
The Department of Defense is paying for the Dallas Wiens face transplant surgery. The DoD hopes that the face transplant procedure will be used to treat injured soldiers.
