Danger Grows of NATO-Russian Clash in Black Sea

As America and NATO pursue a path of escalating provocations against Russia in the Black Sea, the danger of a direct confrontation that could quickly escalate out of control builds. Russia is currently responding to the US deployment of warships equipped with nuclear tipped cruise missiles capable of striking targets inside Russia with the increased deployment of its own naval and land forces to the region.  The article below sounds a clear alarm to those who want a draw-down of western forces to bring the threat level of this powder-keg situation under control.   An excerpt from the article which many may find of immediate interest, and raises some serious questions as to responsibility for the instigation of the crisis in the Caucasus: "The Los Angeles Times ran an article under the headline, “Why Was Cheney’s Guy in Georgia Just Before the War?” on August 26. The piece named Joseph R. Wood, Cheney’s deputy assistant for national security affairs. It asked, “What was a top national security aide to Vice President Dick Cheney doing in Georgia shortly before Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili’s troops engaged in what became a disastrous fight with South Ossetian rebels—and then Russian troops?” A very good question!

A build-up of naval forces is underway in the Black Sea, involving both NATO and Russian ships. The provocative actions by the US-lead military coalition create the danger of a clash with potentially catastrophic consequences.

Late last week, General Anatoly Nogovitsyn, deputy chief of the Russian military’s general staff, claimed that 10 NATO warships were in the Black Sea and that more were on the way.

“In light of the build-up of NATO naval forces in the Black Sea, the [Russian] fleet has also taken on the task of monitoring their activities,” he said.

The ships include two US warships, ostensibly in the region to deliver humanitarian aid to Georgia. These have since been joined by a third.

In addition, NATO admitted that four of its vessels are on a “pre-planned deployment” in the Black Sea, “conducting port visits with Romanian and Bulgarian forces”.

The “long-planned routine” exercise Active Endeavor—which is said to involve training in anti-terrorist and anti-pirate manoeuvres—comprises one warship each from Spain, Germany and Poland. They were reportedly later joined by a US frigate for a three-week schedule of port visits and exercises.

Good stuff. Dick Cheney has a history of this kind of thing as you probably know. To George W Bush, "In order to justify a war in Iraq we need another Pearl harbour" Dick Cheney 2000.

moonwolf, I like this story. It's good stuff.

This should be worth 50- or a 100-billion in special defense appropriations ...

Ukrainians living in Crimean peninsula have been actively protesting against the entry of NATO forces into the Black Sea and their stationing right next to Crimean shores. The protests have been largely ignored by the media though.

yuls.source,

Thanks for that information.  I had heard nothing about it.

Karen,

Thanks. Good "bad" stuff!  With all the focus on the election there are many global issues and challenges that slip onto the back burner when they actually require our attention.

Don't forget:  We liberate.  They invade.

We have seen what Putin can do with a real tiger.  Boy George should pull in his paper tiger claws.

moonwolf, I like this  background story. Escalating confrontation to Russia, Why ? Russia is and was the only Power that can fight American warplanes. The US military-industry needs a war to justify the development of new weapons. (Irak did unfortunately not fight). The nuclear war heads in the US game is the Viagra, to fight the Roman Empire desease of Bush and his nonamerican "CIA bridge club" fighting the US to hell for a few Carlyle profit dollars payed in Dubai.

yuls.source was kind enough to provide a link to a video about Ukrainian citizens protest against the NATO military presence in the Black Sea.

We never hear about this in the western media, and the picture conveyed to us is that the ex-Soviet Republics and their citizens are in lock step with the USA and NATO.  This could not be farther from the truth!

Are you in favor of not provocating Russia into staying off our own shores too?

Bill,

There is no such word as provocating.  Provocation is a noun not a verb.

Russia hadn't and hasn't any plans to be on your shores. LOL!

I'm in favor of not having the USA and therefore Canada turned into a radioactive glass lake by the foolish 'provocations' of the blithering megalomaniacs in Washington directed at an already angry Russia.

How would you like the Russian fleet on exercises in the Gulf of Mexico?  Not much I bet, but if your yoyos keep it up you'll have the Russian fleet in Cuba, armed with nuclear weapons, not a moral leg to stand on as your "leaders" whine and splutter about it to the world, and no John F. Kennedy in the White House.

moonwolf, I like this story. It's good stuff. Exercises - long planned - ha! One thing that Cheney in office or not is good at is rachetting up those arms deals - home and away - he's always a winner! Both sides palying it from both ends at the same time - send them to the sin bin!
