(CNN) -- A second man charged with the brutal murder of two French students in south-east London has appeared in court.

SECOND MAN APPEARS IN COURT

Daniel Sonnex, 23, of Deptford in south east London, is accused of the double murder of Gabriel Ferez and Laurent Bonomo, also both 23, as well as perverting the course of justice.

The British Press Association reported that Sonnex, arrested in Peckham, south London, last Thursday evening, was brought into court in handcuffs and spoke only to confirm his name and address, and to give his age.

Sonnex, who was refused bail by chairman of the bench Yvonne Powell, was remanded in custody until October 20 when he will appear at the Old Bailey.

Nigel Farmer, 33, arrested when he walked into a police station last Monday, is also charged with murder, arson and "attempting to pervert the course of justice." He is next due in court on October 16, also at the Old Bailey.

The bodies of Bonomo and Ferez were found in Bonomo's burned-out apartment in southeast London on June 29, the victims of what the lead detective in the case, Mick Duthie, last week called a "frenzied, brutal, horrific attack."

The two students were in the second year of Masters degrees at the Clermont-Ferrand Polytech in the Auvergne region of central France. Both were nearing the end of a three-month research placement studying DNA at Imperial College London when they were murdered. [/q]

This is a terrible and horrific story, I haven't been in the UK since 1994, now living in Japan. Do you think these kind of stories are becoming more common especially with the number of recent stabbings. How do people feel about this, what's the general atmosphere like, thank you.
