Darren Sutherland Tribute

Very sad news about a young man that seemingly had a wonderful career still a head of him. He was fit healthy and a very good boxer a holder of an Olympic Medal for Ireland 2008.

He had quit amateur boxing in 2008 and was promoted as being the new super star of professional boxing.

Following the exposure gained at the Olympics, Sutherland was offered a number of contracts to signed as a professional boxer. In October 2008 he signed terms with London based promotor Frank Maloney.[6] On 18 December, 2008, Sutherland made a winning start to his professional career with 1st round knockout of Georgi Iliev in Dublin. After the bout, Sutherland's promotor Frank Maloney said "I think we've found a real superstar here tonight and this is just the start of a long journey". His next fight against Siarhei Navarka on 6th March at Wigan's Robin Park Arena ended with Sutherland winning by 3rd round stoppage.
Darren won his 3rd fight at the Fenton Manor Sports Complex in Stoke on June 29 against Vepkhia Tchilaia. Darren won his next fight against Gennadiy Rasalev in York Hall, London

His new manager Frank Maloney had very high hopes for Darren Sutherland.  It was very sad news that this young new hopeful of the professional boxing circuit seemingly suffered from depression that led to him hanging himself at his London home yesterday.

The way he died as not yet been released via normal media channels however a video on youtube.com had a note that stated he had hung himself. The official report being..

A medal-winning Irish Olympic boxer has been found dead by his manager at his flat in Bromley, south London.
Darren Sutherland, 27, who won a bronze medal at the 2008 Games in Beijing, was discovered by Frank Maloney.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed Sutherland was pronounced dead on Monday afternoon and his death was not being treated as suspicious.

I wonder why this young man took his own life, was it because he was alone in a big city even though one can be famous, loneliness can lead to depression. Or perhaps he had been jilted by his love one.  But one thing for sure the media will be milking this sad story of a young man, that from the outside look as having the world as his oyster. Events like this make me feel very sad and that’s because I have sampled such depression and know of its dangers.  But its always the ones that get left behind that suffer more than the person that kills themselves.

My heart goes out to his family and those that will miss him.

What a terrible shame such a tragedy should occur at a time when everything seemed to be going so well for this young boxer. I had been following his career and was looking forward to seeing him progress as a professional. My sympathies to the family and all concerned.

I do hope when you posted this that you were not aware of how Darren took his life.  Darren strangled himself.  If you were aware of this I am sure many people will be offended by your choice of words.  My own brother strangled himself and I found him...sucide is nothing to joke about....My heart goes to the pain Darren suffered and to the pain his family will have to endure for the rest of their lives. May he rest in peace

The official report from the police is that Darren hang himself this does not seem to be a case of strangulation?   I have pieced together a story from a media source and a remark found on youtube.com by those that placed a tribute to him friends and family.

I can not see that anybody could be offended my choice of words related to depression something I know about and have suffered, many others that have also been near to that point of suicide would realize that loneliness, rejection can drive one to a point of no return. Sorry to hear about your brother, but so far it seems that Darren hang his self and self strangulation was not involved. Its a straight forward suicide and I would suggest his family would not like to see it reported any other way.  This death was not an accident, its been reported as a suicide and that's how I reported it with the facts at hand.

No offense was intended and not one word of my report was made up as the media reported exactly the same message the next day after my article was published here on now public. My information had come from official and reliable sources as did theirs.

I do not joke about suicide nor any tragic event. Your offense is totally unfounded. If you have facts from a proven source that the death should have been reported any other way please supply the proof.

My offence was to the comment by one person on this website who referred to Darren as "never one to be found hanging around, that is until now".  Self strangulation and hanging I would consider the same thing in this vein i.e. sucide and I am happy that the media are reporting it as such.

Another Olympic Boxer gone in 2009, sad addition to the cases of Vernon Forrest and Mark Leduc, two former Olympic boxers of 1992.

It is sad to see Darren's  bright light fade to black, and another page added to

Tragic Boxing Stories and Lost Warriors.
