After waiting eight hours for a Sun Valley gunman who barricaded himself in his home and fired on police, officers with the Washoe County Sheriff’s shot tear gas into his home to try to flush him out, a spokeswoman said.

The sheriff’s hostage team attempted to talk with Mattson over the last eight hours, but he would not respond, she said. Officials sent a robot into the house to retrieve weapons, and then they fired the tear gas.

“We’ve decided to move in,” said Deputy Brooke Keast.

A Sun Valley man has barricaded himself inside a home this morning after shooting at a Washoe County Sheriff's sergeant who was serving a felony warrant.

Sheriff's deputies were serving a felony warrant on Dale Herman Mattson, 45, of Sun Valley, when Mattson began to fight with officers and produced a handgun, Washoe County Sheriff's spokesperson Brooke Keast said. Officers were able to wrestle the gun away, but Mattson ran into a home in the 300 block of Gepford Way, grabbed a shotgun and fired a round at an officer inside the home, Keast said.

Nobody was injured in the shooting, but Mattson has barricaded himself in the home and has not made contact with officers, Keast said. A hostage team, bomb squad and SWAT team have established a perimeter and are attempting to make contact with Mattson, Keast said.

Nearby homes have been evacuated. The bomb squad's robot is being deployed to the home in an effort to make contact with Mattson, Keast said.

"Obviously, we don't want to send any officers in there right now," Keast said.

The warrant being served on Mattson was for making bomb threats, Keast said. Mattson also has an outstanding warrant on a misdemeanor traffic incident.

"When you're dealing with a barricaded subject, time is of the essence," Keast said. "We can wait him out, we're just hoping he makes contact."

Police initially believed there were hostages inside the home, but those people have since been located at another residence, Keast said.
