Daughter of Christian music star Steven Curtis Chapman killed, struck by car driven by brother

The 5-year-old daughter of Grammy-winning Christian music star Steven Curtis Chapman was struck and killed Wednesday by a sport utility vehicle driven by her brother, authorities said.

The girl, Maria Sue, was hit in the driveway of the family's home Wednesday afternoon by a Toyota Land Cruiser driven by her teenage brother, said Laura McPherson, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

The brother, whose name and exact age weren't available, apparently did not see the girl, McPherson said. No charges are expected.

"It looks like a tragic accident," she said.

Several family members witnessed the accident, which happened in Williamson County just south of Nashville. The girl died later at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, hospital spokeswoman Laurie Holloway said.

In a statement, Velvet Kelm, a publicist for Chapman, said Maria was the Chapmans' youngest daughter.

This morning on GMA, Robin Roberts had done an interview with Steven Chapman. The Chapman family was able to discuss the tragedy his family has gone through since the death of his youngest daughter.  This story is very heart touching not just because of the loss but how he went to China to adopt these beautiful girls after having children of his own. Please watch the video in the link  above it will touch you in one way or another.

CJaye, I like this story. It's good stuff. Oh NO!  what a sad thing to happen.  Christians know that bad things happen to everyone.  Chapman is one of the devout Christians and he and his family represent that.  Sad day.

Thanks for getting this out so quickly.

Thank you politisite for the flag and comment.  Just so we are clear though, you know the daughter died in May but the family is only now been able to tell the story.  This is all from the interview she did with Robin Roberts mainly.  Steven Chapman has such a beautiful voice and the family is great the way they love the children .

This is awful and so sad. I can't imagine what the family must be going through right now.

They are all pulling together like a family should.

CJaye, I like this story. It's good stuff.  A tragic story.  What a terrible burden that boy must be carrying now.  So easy to happen, so final.

I know it's very tragic. He has to live with it but he has a great support system.  When I was running Rescue that was the hardest things for me to handle.  The children and the tragic accidents. I will never forget any of them.  Thank you for the flag and comment

Yes, it happened a little over two and a half months ago!  If you read the full story and my addition you would have seen the family is just now coming out with the story. They only now have been able to handle this tragic loss and thats the whole point of Robin Roberts interview with the family.  Thank you for your comment though.  Have a great week:)
