It was so heartening to hear about Aravinda De Silva, the world famous SL cricketer getting involved in training Jaffna children. It very much looks like Northern people are eagerly waiting to live their new life free from terror to the fullest, while their once upon a time kith and kin who have good lives in other countries are trying very hard to save LTTE.

I am sure many of us have our own ideas of what Jaffna would be like these days. After years of war and being under the ruthless LTTE terrorists, it's now finally under the full command of Sri Lankan Forces. I wasn't sure what it was like, specially when the western media where we live, continues to describe a genocide and a dangerous scenario for the Tamils living in the North East. Not according to my friend, as he went on to explain how Jaffna is now revitalized with life, energy and hope. The life has come back to normalcy to this city, with children back in schools, people going about their work and no more sounds of shelling or gun fire. He asked me if our friends in the west knew what had transpired in Jaffna since the Sri Lankan Forces chased out the LTTE terrorists. Needless to say he was aware that in this part of the world, the propaganda work of the LTTE showed a different side to the public. A bleak future, bogus atrocities by the army, while in reality the same Sri Lankan Forces have been rebuilding the city. He told me in detail, some of the interesting things they had achieved in Jaffna.

Future Minds of Jaffna

One of the first events had been a major Industrial Exhibition & Trade Fair, jointly organized by the Security Forces and the Peace Secretarial, which was held in December of last year. Leading private companies from Colombo had joined local businesses in displaying the latest technology, providing information on vocational training opportunities and offering bargains in consumer goods and food ahead of the Thai Pongal festival, demonstrating their confidence in the future development of the Jaffna peninsula. Over 300,000 people had attended this EXPO during the three days it was held. That's a lot more than Toronto attracts during a Grand Prix weekend in Toronto. Don't forget this is Jaffna, where according to the pro LTTE and western media, the Sri Lankan Tamils are facing a genocide at the hand of the Sri Lankan Army.

The future minds of Jaffna had offered plenty of fun and games in addition to the Exhibition and Trade Fair. The Vembadi Girls School and Jaffna Central College grounds were full of carnival rides, the like of which the majority of Jaffna children had never seen before. Crowds were entertained by local artistes performing alongside their South Indian counterparts and the music and dancing had continued on late into the night, with the normal curfew in Jaffna town having been lifted for the occasion. One of the main attractions was the ‘North Star’ competition organized by Derana TV, aimed at finding the most talented singer in the Jaffna peninsula. This followed the nationwide success of the Derana TV ‘Dream Star’ competition.
You can read more about the complete event by downloading the 4 page PDF with images.
Cricket returns to JaffnaThat was last year. This year, he told me that they had panned to introduce cricket in Jaffna schools. Now, from my days in school I know we had teams visiting Jaffna and vice versa, but I couldn't imagine, after all the bombings and destruction of the city infrastructure, how could they even have a cricket ground in Jaffna, for kids to play. My biggest surprise was when he eluded to me that not only cricket grounds were there, but that he was also talking to former Sri Lankan vice captain and star cricketer, Aravinda De Silva. For a minute I thought he was pulling my leg. After all our cricketers had been attacked in Lahore, Pakistan not even a month ago. But it was true, he had in fact got Aravinda flown to Jaffna to train school boys, on a 3 day residential coaching camp. This news was later confirmed to me by a colleague of mine, the CEO of Ogilvy Action, the Advertising Agency responsible for conceptualizing the program with Coca Cola as the main sponsor.

According to her, Coca Cola Cricket Pathway (CCCP) program has been in operation for the last one year and 8 such camps had been held in different provinces of the country before. As their corporate commitment to unearthing hidden cricketing gems amongst Sri Lankan school boy cricketers, Coca Cola along with Aravinda de Silva had provided all the technical support and management. Although the original plan was to accommodate the Northern and the Eastern boys in a camp in Dambulla, at the request of Sri Lanka Army and the cricketing body in Jaffna, Coca Cola had taken a bold step by deciding to hold the 9th camp in that city. It had been an unbelievable experience for everyone involved, starting with the warm welcome from the schools and authorities in Jaffna, the thanks giving service by the Bishop of Jaffna and the Pooja organized at the Nallur Kovil which had been especially heartwarming. Most of all it was the kids who had experienced something they'd never expected before in their lives. When the LTTE terrorists were in town, forcing these same kids to become child soldeirs, none of them would have ever thought of holding a bat and playing cricket, let alone meeting Aravinda De Silva. But there they were, with smiles wide as ever, full of passion and love, getting the autographs from one of the greats in Sri Lankan cricket.

Click on the images to enlarge them

The residential camp was held at St John’s College where all the facilities were provided for the boys. A 20/20 game was played at the Jaffna Central College. The unexpected welcome the Southerners received had been very touching. When the President of the School Boys Association for Cricket in his speech said that they felt alienated in all these activities, Aravinda gave him a personal commitment to continue this partnership into the future, and word is that Sanath Jayasuriya may also be interested in joining him. The 7 finalist boys who were selected at this camp will be brought to Colombo for the super camp and I am sure will be treated with the same warmth and friendship they treated their southern friends.

This is not fiction, as it really happened! I didn't hear it from the GOSL, nor did I grab it from any of their web sites. This was directly related to me by 2 friends who wanted the rest of the world to know that, there is still hope in Sri Lanka for everyone, including Tamils. This is a story of how far they would reach to help their fellow citizens in trouble. The Sri Lankan Government and the Armed Forces are doing the same, trying to save the Tamil people from a ruthless terrorist. Not so long ago, many of these people were also evacuated from their homes (making them IDPs) when the SL forces came calling for the ruthless LTTE murderers. Today not only these citizens of Jaffna are back in their own homes, but their kids get to visit exhibitions, enjoy musical shows, play cricket and lead a normal life.

He he , Hiranya. Why Indians need to do it by themselves, since there are a professional organization to do this.

We simply hired that organization, which was already "hired" by SLA to create a war within Sri Lanka - according to "reliable" sources.

:-)

Good Post Hiranya..He is my Best!

Well ARA was at his sublime best when he hit a purple patch after the World Cup triumph in 96. I fondly remember the time he hit no less than SIX back to back hundreds in SRI LANKA. It was pure poetry in motion and perfection personified which I am yet to witness thereafter. If my memory does not fail me, it was at the expense of India (hi .Agent, I note your smirk) and Pakistan.

why is he with the army? Has he joined the army?

Wherever he joined, he is not with your living (going to be dead) megalomaniac god  "Pirapaharan" and his scurry men...!

For your information and broadcasting, these kind of incidents happens in civilized societies like Sri Lanka and India.

Till yesterday, it was Kapil Dev, the former captain of the 1983 World Cup winning Indian cricket team. Today (Sep 24), it is Lieutenant Colonel Kapil Dev of India's Territorial Army (TA).

"I am today proud to wear an Army uniform and at this age to serve the country in this uniform is a proud moment for me," Kapil Dev said soon after he was formally commissioned into the Punjab Regiment of the citizen's army in New Delhi.

The honours were done by Army chief General Deepak Kapoor himself at the Defence Ministry headquarters, South Block, and Kapil accepted the commissioning, coming to attention and smartly saluting, as perfectly as a professional army officer would.

You can lie through all your teeth. You are prepared to cheat the world with rosy pictures and drawings to make it all right with Tamils. If the government is actually interested in Tamils welfare, why not give the ballot to Tamils in a referendum without any armed forces from any side, with independent foreign / UN monitoring ? Probably, then the Tamils freely will say that they don't want to part of Sri Lanka. Probably, then the children would say that they don't want to be trained for Cricket, but would like to have regular access to freedom, food, shelter, education.

All the news you say come from own sources. In your world, you can easily twist the stories to match anything you want.

If the government is prepared to workout goodwill with Tamils, why there is so much resentment in what is going on Sri Lanka among Tamils in Sri Lanka?

Look at the few glimpses of the reality in Sri Lanka,

(1) Hunting the Tigers

(2) Resentments in Sri Lanka Reflect Challenges to Peace

(3) Sri Lanka: War refugees to be detained in huge “welfare camps”

There is a series of goodwill propaganda springing from Government sources to say everything is fine, you don't really need to pay attention to Sri Lanka Humanitarian crisis.

If you take the Tamil children free from the Sri Lankan Army and ask them, how they feel and what they want.

@ Tamiya >
"without any armed forces from any(????) side, with independent foreign / UN monitoring"

errrrrr........................ Tamiya my dearest, wake up wake upppp
we have tried that dance many a time now haven't we?

Anyway,
So you cannot bear to see the people trying to get back to normalcy, can you? I wonder why.

1
Tamiya

You say people are trying to get back to normalcy. ok, let's follow your lead.

Let the Tamils speak to foreign media without having Sri Lankan Army standing within 2 feet.

Let UN come into war zones and captured areas to understand living conditions.

Let Tamils decide what they want. Give them real normalcy in life.

If  you mean that No freedom of expression, Forced disappearances, Torture, Rape, Open prisons, Concentration camps, and Systamatic terror are the facts of "normalcy" for Tamils in Sri Lanka, I grief-strikingly have to agree with you.

1
Hiranya Malwatta

"Let the Tamils speak to foreign media without having Sri Lankan Army standing within 2 feet."

hehe
Those who have been speaking, crying, trashing the LTTE so far are extraordinarily gifted actors, are they? wow, such realistic acting, such talent. Must award them all Oscars.

"Let UN come into war zones and captured areas to understand living conditions."

They did. Wanna hear once again what John Holmes said?

"Let Tamils decide what they want."

:-)
By all means. But not the Terrorist types, and not the not-living-in-Sri Lanka types.

Ahem,

Ever heard what the recent N'Eliya election result was? Or is it that you don't consider those Tamils (yes, the majority population of N'Eliya) anybody worth noticing?

Your frustration is understandable. But what to do.. :-) Nothing.

Please post more links. No one is paying attention to those anyway.

I think Tamils need a political solution. I don't think sports won't solve their issues. Rather than sending sports team why don't you guys send enough food for those poor people. ??!!

These kind of sports news etc may help to hide the Humanitarian crisis caused by Sri lankan army against tamils. But it won't help Tamils who are being killed every day by Srilankan government.

And what ever happen in Jaffna won't solve Humanitarian crisis in Vanni buddy.  :)

Are you working for defence.lk, Army.lk, dailymirror.lk, Srilanka.lk ????

sudharaka

Your concern is understandable. Once reasons for your assylum become null and void, the risk of deportation becomes imminent. Your dream of coming to Eelam/zham has become a nightmare. I really feel for you, my friend. There's still time for you to get over it

@Tranroy >
"why don't you guys send enough food for those poor people. ??!!"

For once I can agree with you !! The food being sent now is most definitely not enough. Not with that huge-bellied Terrorist Prabhakaran and his gang gobbling up 2/3 of every poor civilians food ration.

It was 2/3 some months ago, but now they take more than that from what the escapees say.

@Tranroy >
Oh and I am very glad that you admit that it is the Government of Sri Lanka who had been providing for these people, feeding the terrorists as well by doing that.

You know any other country in the world who feed the terrorists who blow up cities and citizens?

Just get it into your thick skull that the Government is doing it not to fatten up Vellupillai, but because the innocent people are our people and that it is the Government's duty.

Maybe a couple of pots of  "ra" would help. I can give you company too :D.

You know, I can dance like Rajinikanth.

Since u brought the matter up “Eelam“ means land of TODDY. “Eelavar“ means TODDY TAPPER. :-D

For those who are not aware "RA" = "TODDY" an alchoholic brew extracted from the flowers of the palm trees.

0
israeli.agent

Is that so?

There is a cast in Kerala called " Ezhavar " whose traditional  job is to tap toddy.

The Ezhavas are the largest Hindu community in Kerala and Tulu Nadu. They are known by different names in different parts of Kerala. In Malabar they are called Thiyas, while in Tulunadu they are known as Billavas. Ezhavas were traditionally employed as Farmers, Soldiers, Ayurveda Physicians, Warriors, Kalari Trainers and Traders, and were also involved in toddy tapping, Arrack brewing and weaving. Ezhava dynasties such as the Izhathu Mannanars also existed in Kerala. The Chekavar, a warrior section within the community, were part of the militias of local chieftains and kings. There were also renowned Kalari Payattu experts among them. The circus holds a special attraction among community members in north Kerala and many of the famous acrobats of India come from this community.

Thats very interesting. This cast biz. is all bulls**t. Like Buddha preached, one falls in to a higer cast or a lower cast, not by birth but by the merits of his actions alone.

Absolutely, sudharaka. Here is an article which is very informative on this caste issue degrading the societies wherever it exists.(if the overwhelming tamizh emotions are filtered out, it may fit to describe the caste system still exist in most of the societies).Though it is very off topic, it is an interesting read.

On casteism in Tamilnadu and India:

I have never experienced any caste-based discrimination all through out school life, started feeling the problems the caste issues first when I entered college. These problems were brought among my classmates batchmates by a group of Senior students with leftist Inclination. Suddenly many of friends become enemies and the peer pressure forced most of us to join gangs that did nothing but works of hooligans.

Before we realised most of us were in the vortex of caste based politics/conflicts and some of them spoiled their entire college life and degrees by obeying the orders of our seniors. Needless to mention the bloody wars we had in the campus leading to near death experience for some of my batch mates. These may not be strange for most of universities.

At the same time , the famous Anna University witnessed in Senate and Syndicate level caste polarization among Professors and Doctors who were to teach us. These elements involved in such politics later emerged as even big politicians in the national level.

After having seen these casteism among the so called professors and Doctors ( PhDs) , I came to strong conclusion that education can never eradicate casteism in this country. Perhaps the flash point for starting caste controversies are the educational institutions, be it the requirement of Caste declaration in the application or later during reservation for entrance in to Degrees.

Later during my campus interview, I had first hand experience of caste discrimination inflicted on me by a south Indian, (on this dark Tamilian), though the North Indians in the interview board were kinder and fair to me.

Arvinda went to cheer the army whose job is to kill Tamils.

Looks like there is not much money in the treasure to pay for army. So instead of paying them salary the government is cheering them with events like that.

1

Dan't varri abavut Sri Lankar Army. Once the remaining 25 square kilometers is done with, the Government will have enough money to maintain 10 armies like the present one.

Where did you say Pirapaharan hiding all his money? Under the mattress, right?
