Cleveland Park, DC – The Cold Stone Creamery at 3508 Connecticut Avenue NW is displaying new signs “For Sale” and “Closed until further notice”. The doors are locked but the lights are on in the empty but still furnished store.

Internet searches provide no information on this specific location, but the troubles of their sister franchisees have received attention from the mass media. A Manitowoc, Wisconsin location is closing. Signs at a Goldsboro, North Carolina location echo those in DC, “temporarily closed” and franchise for sale. A Grand Haven, Michigan location has closed but is re-opening.

Cold Stone Creamery's national website is up and running. It is a subsidiary of the Kahala Corporation. Executives from Cold Stone Creamery are visiting franchisees to rally the troops in the face of economic hard times.

Well, it IS winter time.  Not too many people are buying ice cream.

These stores are garbage from an investment standpoint and the company knows it. They're expensive to build and they don't make money. My brother owned six stores in a warm weather state. In nearly three years of operation, he said not one of his stores ever made a profit. He lost millions. Not only did he lose all of his money, but he borrowed incessantly from friends and family including me, until we were all nearly bankrupt. The same thing is happening throughout the country. Only a fool would buy a Cold Stone.

I'll stick to The Meadows, they're much cheaper and the product is 10x better..

I've heard the parent company governs its franchisees with a heavy hand. That always comes back to bite you. Sounds like they have a bunch of stoneheads running this company.

Since more ice cream is sold during cooler months than it is during warmer months, maybe a better location would be one that isn't a warm weather state.
